Wow, your pictures have me curious as well.

Where is the compressor? Perhaps in the under dash unit powered by an electric motor? I assume the condenser is under the hood? below the car?

interesting set up, would love to see more pics.

I think the compressor was removed.
The fan shroud looks like one of those modified for an A/C compressor, so it must have had a compressor installed at some point.
Probably the system broke, and the owner decided to dismantle it.

There were several brands of ac units added on by the dealers then, some pretty neatly installed such as the one u have. Compressor has been removed but with a new compact style compressor, some new rubber hoses, drier and a complete flush it may not take much to revive. Also check under front for the cond/fan assy, good find, one i would definately keep. I picked up the under hood unit for 73 and up supers at Circle yer wagons last wk end, for future use.

Thanks for the input. The owner wants to remove it from the car. He doesn't want it, so it will probably up for sale.

Thanks,

Ruben

That is an early unit and I have one of the later units from the same company. The name escapes me at the moment. I would have to pull it out of storage. I think I remember there being information about it in the archives.

Whether it works or not, removing it would be a mistake.

AC is desirable, and its about 80% already there.

Thats a neat old setup. Can you convince him to just let it be?

The AC compressor was removed, see photo below. See the rear second pulley (on the crank pulley) for driving the compressor, and the offset fan shroud outlet on the driver side (which should have the air hose connected, by the way).

Thanks for all the information about unit. Spoke with the owner of car, he is very adamant about removing unit from car. Will post pics of unit once removed from car.

Thank you,

Ruben

the gentleman who owns the car is 70 years old, so I don't qualify him as a kid. He plans to drive it on weekends and then who know's. Car is a 63 pearl white w/ red interior. Car has 83,000 orig miles and is very nice. Car needs a good detailing as it has been sitting for 5 years. Will post pics if the owner is ok with it.

thanks,
Ruben

That is an original accessory AND HARD TO COME BY IN THAT SHAPE (blower). It is a desireable AC and looks great in an early ghia

The maker is most likely -- Delanair

check out

http://karmann-ghia-archiv.de/technikarchivklimaanlagen.html

The bug has the fan shroud and the AC pulley in the engine. Its missing compressor, but who cares that is an easy replacement part from Gilmore Enterprises

Does it still have the condensors under the car (could be up front near fron end or under body pan or above tranny).

If anyone needs it I have the instructions for installing this one and the blueprint for the installation . Also have the model number somewhere for putting in a 12V motor from an 80's Chrysler.

Heres the other design in a ghia
