Yesterday morning on the way to work, heard a new noise. A mild squeaky grinding noise. Sounds like it's coming from behind the speedometer. Would a worn speedo cable make this kind of noise? My needle has been rocking back and forth a little since I got the car and I know that's a sign of wear. Just never had one make any noise.

It could be the speedo cable or it could be the speedo itself.

I have fixed this issue, when it was the cable, by squirting a little bit of thin oil down the cable from the top. I believe last time I used 3-in-1 sewing machine oil. I have heard people say on here they used motorcycle cable oil too.

Or replace the cable...

Take the cable off of the speedo head and drive it. If the noise is still there it is the cable, if gone it is in the speedo. There is a thread on here about taking one apart to clean and lube if needed.

Take the speedo cable off and slowly drip oil into it. Yes it takes a while but may stop your noise and shifting speedo needle.
