Nice! Do you know what size are the nylock nuts? I want to change mine as well. I have the Euromax one and it too will set off the horn sometimes if the bus is stationary. I can tell it's bending too much. So, I'm changing it. I thought I might as well switch away from cotter pins, they are a pain to get in there. _________________ '69 Riviera Bay

Yup, they're M8, on 30mm 1.25 bolts. I bought stainless steel, grade 8. _________________ Mike

I picked up this "German" coupler from a local parts house today. They said the brand was German when I asked them on the phone. It has the HARD rubber feel to it, and a VW logo, but it's also got an elephant logo stamped in to it. I've never seen this logo before. Anyone seen one of these?

It must be some german rubber manufacturer, I have seen it in some water hoses and rubber parts of my '81 BMW too

How about that. Learn something new here everyday. Maybe Scott at German Supply will chime in. I'm betting he knows. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia (Happy Trails, SOLD)

|
|
A new development? Every time I work on the underside of my bus, I peel factory undercoating off. The bus has 90k documented miles, with DMV records and receipts. (Parked in a barn unregistered from 19484-2008ish.)
When I peeled the waxy gunk off the castellated nuts and cotter pins, I was cussing at finding a way to get a wrench on the upper bolts. The lower ones were no problem using the "clutch pedal hold down" technique. I did not want to f'up my #14 plastic clip, so I didn't even open the driver door to access anything. I eventually got a 13mm wrench on each, and did the deed this way:
Can't see it in this pic. But there is a ground wire that connects from the steering box flange bolt to the steering shaft bolt for the horn.
Tools required, start to finish:
But what have we here
The elephant logo on my disc, which SHOULD be the factory coupler! It's not in the worse shape, but when I saw this thread I checked mine and did see one crack. It's WAY worse when I bent it. Anybody think the Elephant Group was an OG supplier, or do you think my bus got a dealership coating after a steering coupler replacement??

I should of done some research before I put my steering coupler on I bought a rebuilt box from wolf gang and I ordered the coupling and I told him to give me the best one he had so when I got it I didn't think to bend it or anything so anyways I put it all together and drive about 20 miles and turn into a parking lot and it broke In half! The coupler says "kafer" on it and has the same part number as the og one above so just beware of the cheap ones. |

The cheap aftermarket ones are easily identifiable by bending them. If they fold trash it. The good ones will not bend and have reinforced innards in the rubber. Cracking is not necessarily indicative of failure. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

This is a OG part and they were made by the Metzeler gummiwerke in Munchen.

It seems there is a washer on the top, between the coupler & steering shaft?
is that what I'm seeing there?
Mine had no washers, but my coupler is cracked & I broke it while removing it. |

I've seen buses with and without; the bus parts book does not show them.
HOWEVER, if you use the castellated nuts with the cotter pins, you MUST use washers under the nuts. Without them, the nuts will be too drawn on to the bolts and the cotter pin will not index with the nut enough to lock it properly. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works.
