Damn Robbo, your coupler was almost as bad as mine.
Washers on everything man, they distribute the force. _________________ Wash your hands

so why then only 2 on top, and none below?
mine were not castle nuts, on a 78.
I never saw any washers above or below listed on any diagram.
I won't worry about them then |

that's odd,
one link you provided shows a washer,
the other link you provided doesn't..
http://www.jerseylooker.com/FicheDump/EarlyBaywindow/4-018.jpg
what would the 2 bolts be for?
it seems if they go 'under the steering shaft', wouldn't that bend the coupler down on those two sides?
any idea what the part # is, if I were to need these washers? |

Uhh, last time I checked, they're just M8 washers. Again, thickness is important if you use the castellated nut/cotter pin setup like the early quality buses did. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Bolts should ALWAYS have a washer under the head, and according to everything I've seen on a VW, a spring washer under the nut to both lock the nut and spread out the force. Remember that all these rubber pieces are over 30 yers old now. _________________ '72 Elm Green Deluxe |

one of my steering shaft tabs is bent a good deal.
think this is cause for concern?
should I heat it & bend it back, or just leave as is?

Put a crescent wrench on it and bend it back. |

Good catch!
Metzeler is well known in the motorcycle world for tires and inner tubes, especially among BMW motorcycle riders. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Can anyone suggest a current source for the best quality coupler available?
German Supply is out of stock as is WW. Bus Depot lists the Euromax version.
It seems the WagenWerks part has performed well for the OP of this thread, but curious if there are other options currently?

Vintage Parts in Santa Clarita CA (my home town!) sells over the phone only. They had the "elephant" coupler last time I was there.

if you zoom in you can see the vw logo on it, but I can't seem to tell f that is the elephant on the right side of it or not. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Ya I seen that, thank you. I am worried they changed the part but did not change the
picture.
Guess I will call on Tuesday and see if I can get someone to put a hand on it, to confirm it is VW.
Thank you

I got some generic ones a couple years back that were from Europe and were supposed to be genuine VW. When I finally found a genuine VW one it was a perfect match for the generic ones and the the grind mark on the generic ones was where the VW logo was on the genuine one.
I found an old thread from 2011 and someone had really good luck with the Wolfsburg West ones. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Here is mine from WW purchased in October 2013. Looks like they carry the other version pictured earlier in this thread (the one with fibrous edges) now though.

The bonded rubber fiber joint like WW list (out of stock), is the one's I remember seeing in the old days.
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211415417
With the composition of rubber now days. I am going to see if I can source a urethane coupler.
Thank you
