good daily driver combo:
1956cc
76 CB crank
90.5 Mahle B pistons
CB 5.5" rods
DRD 40x35 heads 55cc, single heavy springs
CB 2241 cam (110 with less lift and more duration)
1.25 rockers on CB solid shafts
manton chromoly pushrods
1.5" CB merged header with single quiet pack
44 IDF webers, match ported manifolds, CSP linkage
Bosch 019 with points, German blue coil, German bosch wires, NGK plugs
German doghouse shroud and tin, full flowed, CB thin sump
Dynamic balance by CB

Very nice running engine, 40 idf's with 34 vents might be better for this engine, but loves to rev. I think the power band is perfect for freeway cruising

Put 5000 miles on it in my 68 bug,
its now in my 71 super which is driven almost daily.
I like it much better with the 3.88 diff in the super

tire pressure rear were 20lbs

Its been a fun daily driver in my bus for the last few years. It now runs dual ICTs, 1 3/8 extractor with hide away, and gets over 30mpg unloaded and 25 with 1500-2000 pounds of cargo. much more calm but I do miss power the 44s or 36s I originally ran and the sound of the S&S merged exhaust!

Same car, trans, exhaust as on the 1699. New tires since the old ones were too dry rotted to run. In the first pass I lost top end due to emptied float bowl. After the run I adjusted the bowl level and made the second pass. HP calculator stated 53.11, pretty weak!! At rebuild time the heads will get the step cut out to bump the compression to usable levels.

Engine specs.

I feel guilty not posting a dyno graph, but on the other hand I might as well since I often talk about this engine and it makes sense to list the whole thing here.

2007cc
half worn out as-41 case with a welded pickup extension and tunacan sump, surfaced approx .040 to get deck height correct
regular old mahle 90.5 kit rehoned with grant rings
78 dpr crossdrilled welded crank, stock flywheel 8 doweled and balanced together, KS bearings
VW rods rebuilt by me, .003 rod bearing clearance

stock cam gear with a groove cut in it
web 110/163 cam on 105LC, 4 degree advance, cb lifters with the loose pushrod cups shimmed and locktited in place
STOCK pushrods
lightened stock rockers on solid shimmed stock shafts with porsche swivel adjusters

The heads are 311 castings I did myself
used 40x35.5 bugpack valves I was given for free out of a certain turbo hillclimb motor that "ran lean" and they replaced the valves as precaution. I no worry Laughing
PEP seats and guides, intake seats are the old Gene berg style tapered ID.
intake ports are slick but small, only 57cc, chambers are 56cc if I remember right or whatever it was to get 9-1 cr with .060 deck
Oval wire beehive springs from SBI, stock from a certain year 4cyl s-10, 240LB open with .070 to bind, used ford retainers machined to fit the springs, filed keepers

CB big beef tall intakes with thin gaskets and flanged nuts and 1/4 phenolic spacers under carbs
40 IDF carbs, 32 vents. 140 main 220 air f-15 tubes, 3" stacks built into airfilters. ballbearing crossbar linkage

tri-y header, 1 1/2 primaries x 32 long, 1 3/4 X 16 long secondaries, 2.25 collector into flo-pro muffler

STEEL pulleys and vw doghouse shroud with doghouse and heater passages removed, skinny fan, and a GENERATOR, Ugly external oil cooler
recurved mexican 009 with petronix 2 and ford TFI coil

This combo is how I like it, starts to tune in at 3300 rpm, max torque near 4000-4500, falls off just short of 6000. very happy at 3300-4000 rpm

NOW, in addition to the way it is now, I tried a few other things on it over the years.............
I tried short intakes, smaller diameter intakes, regular ones, and tall intakes
Dells and Webers with 32 and 34 vents
8.3-1cr, 8.5-1cr, 9-1 cr, 9.7-1 cr
sing grooves(didn't do jack)
044 heads with big ports (too big)
2241 cam then engle 120 cam, tried advanced and retarded, also 1.25 rockers
and of course........... at least 20 different headers and muffler combos

The peak power does not matter to me as much as running cool, running smooth with minimum lifter noises, working at 6000ft+ altitude(a tricky subject in itself) being a ball to drive with the stock trans, and not having to worry about hurting it.
Don't know what else to try besides building it bigger, or let RC talk me into a FK cam, oh well it's fine how it is.

2017 - 78x90.5
Crank - CB Nitrided 4340
Eagle Knock off 5.5 H Beam Rods
Engle 130 Cam
043 40x35 heads ported by me.
Dual 44 Webers
1.5 Sump
26mm Schadek Pump
1.5 Berg Merged with heat header and Dynomax Fat boy muffler

It has 9.8.1 Compression. Runs cool and is very linear in it power. This Refutes all the Nay Sayers about running a 300+ duration cam on the street. The Webers are jetted - 55 idles, 155 Mains, F11 Tubes and 200 Airs. It has plenty of torque without having to rev it a lot to get it going from a stand still. It is very smooth actually. It also revs very well. I can go as high as Shifting out of 2nd very easily at the III ( Stock 3rd Gear shift point) on the speedo. Strong to to 7000 rpm. The heads I did myself. Had them Fly Cut .060 to get them down to 52CC from 60CC. Opened the Intakes and D Ported them left them them somewhat rough for fuel tumble or atomization and he Exhaust glass smooth and open them up too.
Make sure when you replace Carbs and Carb Manifolds to use new Gaskets. Chased a rough running carb for about a month. I found out you can't reuse them to many times. LOL! Thought I had a bad carb and bought another and found that it did the same thing and this clued me in. So I have a 44 IDF for sale - 250.00

so why did you go with the 130 cam and not 42x37 heads? I've only seen a handfull of engines with the 130 and most were 2332's with huge heads.

sounds like a fun engine though, 1.1 rockers right?

I am hoping that i can get the right information to finish our 2332.....it is a new case ,new 84mm counterweighted crank with chevy rod journals, new H-beam rods, 94mm Mahle pistons,Engle W-120 cam,1:3 Pauter Roller Rockers and 48 Webers and all balanced rotary assembly ........now my question is as follows we have 3 sets of heads at our disposal starting with a set of CB Street Eliminators, a set of SuperFlows, and finally a set of welded up 043's they all yeild a 58CC combustion chambers so that will bring us to our 9.5:1 compression ratio ........now what we are looking for is the best set of heads that will compliment our combination and yeild us a healthy 180-190 reliable horsepower ................the bottom end was built by POWERHAUS so i am assuming that it should be built very well and be reliable, the only thing left is the heads which we opted not to buy their 044 heads and use one of the sets we have available to us for free...remember free is free so PLS help us with the right choice......CB STREET ELIMINATOR/SUPER FLOW/ OR 043'S WELDED AND PORTED ....PLS KEEP IN MIND ALL THE HEADS ARE P&P
THANK YOU

This post would be better suited in the Performance Forum as it's own topic but here goes.
043 if you want to cool well on the street, they should have 8 fins and better air flow-through in the upper head area than aftermarket heads.
Street Eliminators aren't really for the street since they have 6 fins and a very solid upper head area that doesn't flow air through it in many locations. SE probably will net you more power but unless you are in an open bodied car you may run the risk of overheat.
Same with Super Flo's. I would keep them on the track.
It would have been nice for CB performance to be realistic in their advertising before I bought my CE Heads for a street buggy but I live with them only on the weekends. Even in a buggy they have heat issues.

hi neil .nice motor great job super nice looking bug . great ET times . i see you did not do a burn out . i dont know if you do burn outs or not . i have found out over the years of raceing vws for me burn outs make no differnts on my ET times . if i do a burn out my ET is the same as if i did not do a burn out . if a vw is set up right there is no need for a burn out . i stay out of the water all drag strips now adays put down a lot of VHT . down on the starting line . i allways leave the starting line with the frount wheels in the air . i feal that doing burn outs allways shortens the motors life and is hard on the drive train .i know guys love to do burn outs like the big boys do with there frount motor race cars lol and if burn outs are your thing go for it . just my two cents on burn outs spencerfvee................................................................................................................................................................................................

Sorry they closed our track for the mean time. I use Old Kunia road as my testing grounds. It has a slight slalom. I did 3rd gear 115mph @5500 rpms right before I reached the last light. Felt about a quartermile, I will measure it later. My engine peaks out at around 8200rpms. I could Dyno it but I chose not to care. Makes it more mysterious like.

2276 Scat Kit, balanced internals, Brazil AS 41 case , 9.3 CR
Scat 82 forged crank
Scat 5.4" H beams
Scat Lube a lobes ( yikes I know) . Next tear down cb 2pc lightwts
Engle FK8 cam, Scat straight cuts, advanced 1 degree @ the gear. Next tear down 86c.
Scat Pro comp true 1.4s
30mm Melling FF, stock oil cooler, FF set up and 72 pass elec fan cooler
Mahle 94s P/C
44x37.5 Scat wedge ports done up by DRD
Manton pushrods
All stock tins, aftermarket however
IDAs 3rd progression drilled, 63/168ish/200 F7 40vents ( hand drilled by me)
Bugpack 1 5/8" w/ Mondo fatboy
13lb Scat flywheel, kennedy stage 1, Kush lock
3.88 R/P w/ all the superstreet usual goodies, stock thru 3rd w/ .082 4th
010 dist
Facet Red label
Castrol 10w-30 w/ zddpplus
Empi 3.5qt sump

I did a around island drive to seat my rings, a little over 100 miles and never spiked hotter than 195F. Oahu is only 44 miles long and 30 miles across w/ over million people living on this island alone. OMG. Shocked

After snapping this picture a year and some ago, I realized and reindexed my dist pinion so the badge was centered...
