Hey guys i need some help... 58 bus with the OG trans.

I have been working on this for a few days now and cant seem to make any progress. First off i have searched but still am unable to get anything to work.

Basically i had both shifter couplers fail on me with in days of each other (front and rear.) The rear was replaced, no big deal... and the front had to be cut off. In the process the area in the front floor that the shifter sits on broke away from the two rails running under the floor (the rails the the shifter sits between and also where the emergency brake mounts)

i was able to press the floor back down to the rails and tack weld it in place. When I wend to install the shift rod, the guide with the "m" spring and the lock out plate i was only able to find 3rd and 4th gear, no reverse, no first or second. It is as if it is only allowing forward and backwards motion, no side to side...

I have tried moving the lockout plate around, checked and tightened the shifter couplers (front and rear) and also setting the shift rod in the neutral position and bolting shifter and lock out plate down. However i still cant find any gear aside from 3 and 4...

I have not greased everything as i am still trying to adjust it.

Any suggestions as to lining this thing back up, I have not had issues with this in the past.... I posted a few pictures, maybe you may be able to identify something wrong or point me in the correct direction...

Thanks for the help guys, im stumped!

I usually grease everything while it is apart. You might double check to make certain you got the shift coupler bolts in the proper dimples on the shift rod.

Thanks for the input, I am 100% sure the bolts are in their holes... Would grease make any difference just finding gears, I'm not concerned with smooth shifting yet...?

Also is there. Process for making sure everything is lined up? For instance find first or reverse then tighten down the shifter?

You might want to make sure that you put that plate in properly. an incorrect install could cause the symptoms that you are describing.

This is a later version but it gives you an idea of the orientation for the larger Reverse lockout tab

Get under the bus with a light and, while someone moves the shift lever around, see if the ball on the shift lever is going far enough down into the cup on the end of the shifting shaft. If it isn't, that messes things up.

Ok, messed with the shifter for a bit today and learned a bit. First of all it appears that it is necessary to have the whole apparatus covered in grease for it to even begin to work... also my lock out plate was shifting towards the rear as i was bolting it down causing the shifter to hit it when shifting forward (1st and 3rd gears,) this also made it impossible to get it into reverse.

It still is a little difficult to get all the way into 2nd but i should be able to scoot the plate around a bit?

As always, thanks for the input!

Any progress or resolution to the issue you were having?
I am having the same issue I can get 3rd and 4th gears no problem
Can't get reverse. And only get 1st and 2nd if I slightly depress
The shifter down a little and then release it. As this seem to
Take pressure off of the shifter(which shouldn't be) then I get 1st and 2nd
Gears no problem. When I look under at the bottom of the shifter
At the ball that sits into the shift rod in 1st and 2nd the ball is
All the way down into the cup of the shift rod.
Which again shouldn't be.
It seems that I'm not getting the correct slight side to side movement
For it to go into 1st and 2nd gears correctly
And reverse also which not getting this slight side to side movement
I feel it isn't allowing the shift rods to move
The "hockey stick" inside the nose cone into correct position for reverse.
Am I incorrect in thinking this? Any input
Is greatly appreciated.
(note) front shift rod is new. Mount is new and all plastic bushings.
Trans is rebuilt fresh from Rancho.
I was getting reverse with the old shifter
But had to force it. Thank you in advance for any help

Hi Greg. When you say make sure the bolts are in the correct dimples
On the shifter are you saying that to just make sure
The bolts are in the dimples themselves? Or are the bolts supposed
To be in one specific dimple? I ask this because I notice
On my 60s shift rods there are 2 dimples on the back end
Of the main shift rod at the Trans side. But only 1 dimple
On the front end of the main shift rod. But there are 2 dimples on
The end of the front shift rod. Thank you
For any insight to why this is.

I recently was able to solve my issues with
Only getting 3rd and 4th gears and no 1st or 2nd and no
Reverse.
With the advice from a friend who had the same
Problem and figured out what was going
On. After installing a fresh rebuilt Trans. All new bushings and couplers
And shift rods. The placement of the org. Dimples in the main shift rod at back end and placement of dimple on the hockey stick rod coming from the nose cone were off. I simply just had to use a flat ended
Bolt through the rear coupler to the main shift rod
Once I was able to find the sweet spot after
Adjusting and getting all 4 gears working
Correctly and reverse as well I had to carefully drill
A new dimple into the rear end
Of the main shift rod. Then install the correct grub screw
And problem solved.
Hopefully this can help some of
You that seem to be having the same
Problem.
