PostPosted: Wed Oct 20, 2010 4:40 pm    Post subject: Where Are They Now Type II Count Thread Reply with quote

The East Vs. West thread (which is mainly a pissing contest between two posters) has shown that many type IIs change hands and move back and fourth over the years. The rusty east want early VWs and have to buy out west, the dry west want rare mcode buses and bring in rust buckets from the east. The UK wants them all and has the $ to import.

Post your decoded M Code specs including delivery port and current location of your beloved ride and as much history of its past as you can (how long its been where).

This is not a style contest or a slammed vs stock type thing, Im only trying to find out how many type IIs are still out there and where they originated. In another thread it was speculated that only certain geographic areas got certain M Codes (only the south got safaris and the north got gas heaters, the south got 6 popouts and the north only got 2, etc), if any trends in the delivery port and options arise i will post the data.

My prediction is the east had more buses delivered but the west has more survivors.

Ancient pics are OK but the bus must still exist and not just be a bulkhead or vin tag. If you are not the current owner please state so and list last known location.

edit:
This thread will not be a "coast" thing, the main reason of the count is to look at delivery port and option data and the possible trends that may result.

Current location info will also be posted and readers can interpret the data as they wish.

I bought this bus on my 18th birthday in August 1990 for $600. It had a seized 1500cc that was sitting in the cargo bed. This picture is after 4 years of working and saving for the engine, trans and lowering kits.

The PO is a friends older brother, who took this bus surfing with his cousin all the time. They went to Baja and parts of Mexico and all along the west coast in general. He sold this to me after the engine seized and he had already purchased a '63 CC to replace it. The price was originally set at $500 until I got there with the money, it then quickly became $600.

Before he owned it, and I have only heard this second hand, the original owner had it up until about 1985-88. At which time, a scavenger found it, bought it and took all the rear seats and kick panels before selling it to my friends brother. That would make me at least the 4th owner, but I will have owned it the longest in about 2 more years.

This bus has always been in the Bay Area of California as far as I can tell and is still here today.

Let's clarify this thread.

Port of entry - yes
M-codes if available and documented - yes
Pictures of current condition - yes
Vin# - Not required (for obvious reasons)

Correct. This is NOT a registry, just some bits of data for a spreadsheet nerd to look at and share. I would love to see something like all the dusty condition single cabs only coming into south west ports, or 12V options only showing up in northern states.

AND current location. Its not a West Vs East contest like the other thread. Middle America is welcome and wanted!! I would expect to see a concentration of Type IIs on the west but thats only due to dry climate. Lets see if the rust belt and the east caretakers of type IIs support the same amount of VWs.

History if you have it and want to share.

As in people tracking it down? What is the danger in posting a vin#?

This should be obvious, but some people are oblivious. Some things, just need not be said (or typed).
