that's a really neat looking buggy! The only thing I would suggest is to make some modifications to the roll cage - move or add some additional tubes closer to the outsides of the top and then have another tube that goes down to the rear along the same plane - you want all the forces to be able to transmit directly into the next area and the way it's set up now the windshield frame forces go to the center area of the main roll hoop and then not directly to the rear of the chassis, instead there are those little diagional sections down lower. This probably sounds like jibberish but it's difficult to describe. _________________ Nick |

Thanks Nick, I will see how I can add in some more support bars. I yanked the front beam and pulled the spindles off. I will be ordering a new link/king pin kit. I already have new bushings to go in the axle tubes.
Does anyone know who sells new boots for the steering racks? They look like the same boots off some Rancho shocks, thx.

That looks like an automobile rack. A local rebuilder should be able to get you the correct ones. If you take a few close ups someone here may be able to identify it. |

Thanks Perrib, I got some new boots for it but I need to know if anyone sells the bearing for this pinion gear? Its a roller/needle bearing. There is no name on this old rack, thanks.

Should be a number on the 2 bearing parts. Most bearings are standard size.
I needed bearings for a Vanagon automatic trans pinion shaft. I found that they were the same as the front wheel bearings on a 1 ton Chevy truck. My local parts store had them on the shelf. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Thanks Russ, but there were no #'s on these, so what I did was soak them in the parts washer, cleaned them real good and regreased, repainted and put it all back together. It works nice and smooth now. I ordered some new rod ends from Speedway Motors and should get them by the end of the week.
Rack:
Painted Column:
Old wasted rod ends:
New ones on the way:

Your project is really coming together, nice work.
And I thought my frame was rough when I first started. |

Thanks, today I laid the trans in so I could put in a front strap. Welded in some studs.

Cleaned up the trans and painted it. The rail is going to be painted hammered silver with blue body panels..just not sure which blue yet.

Put in an Oh Shit bar for passengers:
Added some brake line tabs in rear and front:
Added some light tabs for towing lights:
Started assembling the beam:
Put the front brakes together. The wheel cylinders are rears. Will it have much less stopping power even though the rail is pretty light? thanks

Very nice build.
As for the body panels, I would either paint them black, or a mettalic medium blue. Just my 2cents |

Thanks, actually I am also thinking of a blue color. When Im ready I'll hit the paint supply shop. I've been slowly putting things back together like the shifter, cutting brake, steering rack, fuel tank, etc. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

some kind of metallic or flat navy blue would look really good with the silver

Thanks, starting to reassemble. I need to press in new link and king pin bushings. Do you guys usually have someone with a press do it or you do them yourself in a vice?
