Many of you probably know who Daniel Stern is, or at least have visited his site.

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/

He is focused (pun intended) on the topic of automotive lighting. He knows his stuff, and offers lots of suggestion on improving on the factory designs. I recently contacted him to order one of his high quality 3rd Brake Light Kits. In our e-mail exchanges, he asked me a number of questions about my other lighting choices and wiring on my Westy, and for the most part, liked the improvements I have made.

Headlight relays-check

H4 primary headlights - check, although Hella would not have been his choice, the Cibie H4 would have been better.

South African grille with aux high beams - check

Third brake light - I'm ordering it, model #39 on his site, btw.

So far so good, right?

Then he dropped this little nugget into his e-mail. Remember, he can't sell me these parts, so no profit in him sharing this with me.

The brake lights and turn signals can be made 40% brighter, but I can't sell you those bulbs. You can get the required bulbs (which have nice nickel-plate bases that will not corrode and seize in the sockets) from your local Honda dealer. Part number for the single-filament variety (replacing 1141, 1156, 1073, or P21W) is 34903-SF1-A01. Part number for the dual-filament variety (replacing 1034, 1157, 2057, 2357, or P21/5W in brake/tail or park/turn lights) is 34906-SL0-A01. Don't try to buy these bulbs in the aftermarket; everything but the genuine Honda product is junk. These are ultrapremium bulbs with very long lifespan, corrosion-proof nickelplate base, etc.

I asked his permission to cut and paste here. Looks like I'm heading to the Honda dealer soon.

Yep, should be plug and play. They are just better quality versions of the bulbs you have there now. Wouldn't surprise me if these are the same or equivalent to what TK is selling. Wherever you get them, better bulbs is mo'better!!!

Great post!

Dumb question...
What quantity of each part number do I need to replace these bulbs on my van?

Heres what I came up with for my 1982 Westy. Ordered them from www.hondapartsnow.com. Honda Dealer in California.

2..part number 34901-SB0-671 single filament....$1.03 each
6..part number 34906-SL0-A01 double filiment...$3.72 each
2...part number 34903-SF1-A01 single filiment....$3.69 each

This will give you all the bulbs needed for the front turn signals and all the bulbs inside both rear brake housing units.

Still looking for the side marker bulbs.

I was just going to replace the rear red side marker lights with after market LED Red trailer lights you can get from Walmart... I dunno, the look good on my trailer, and are roughly the safe size in diameter, just a little taller than the stock. I am curious.. Maybe I willl buy a set and try them out... BTW, great post....

How come there is 2 kind of single filament?? Embarassed I'm sure you have the correct answer.maybe you can put the affectation for each one?
I'm running single filament on my blinkers, since I put every thing like in europe....but in 8 years,I never bought a single light bulb, always took it from a junk van or car Laughing So I don't know what needed:that's kinda funny Confused

The tail light bulb 34901-SB0-671 is a 12V/5W bulb. You can safely identify it as its the smaller of the four bulbs in the tail light assembly. The other single filiment bulb 34903-SF1-A01 is the back up bulb and its 12V/21W.

Greetings guys and gals. I might have to stand corrected on my earlier posting about the Honda bulbs.

I thought that since the front turn signal was a double filiment lamp, the rear turn signal would also be a double filiment bulb as well.

This morning I removed the front turn signal lense and did verify that it was indeed a double filiment bulb (34906-SL0-A01).
However when I removed the rear light housing to double check, I found that just about ALL the bulbs were in fact a single filiment bulb (34903-SF1-A01)

The tail light bulb IS a single filiment bulb and the part number is (34901-SB0-671)

I replaced the bulbs about 4 years ago and when I did I slathered some dialectic grease on the bottoms of each bulb. Today when I removed them to verify the size and type I was pleasantly surprised that the bulbs popped right out of their sockets and there wasnt a sign of any rust.
Thanks all for the grease tip Laughing

Still curious to as why the front turn signal bulbs have a double filiment and two contact points whereas the rear bulbs would only have a single filiment and only one contact point.

The front is a parking lamp and turn signal, hence the dual filament.

Thankx James...another ?? , would a 12VP 21W work in a socket that actually accepts a 12V25W bulb, and will it behave itself or cause a problem.

Should work fine I believe. It's 4W lower so it won't be as bright...but not by much.

So...can someone please put together a nice <corrected> shopping list including where each type goes? ...& what about side marker lights? That'd be awesome.

I tend to print these kernels of wisdom & deal with them later when I can...

Thanks, all!
