Crikey. After all that you may as well grab a grinder and follow the line of those gussets through the angle. I'm assuming that bottom bolt will have a hard washer too when all is said and done. You're obviously not concerned about weight with all that weld.

Thanks mate!

Well I was going to have our metal supplier trim those corners to a 45 degree. But, I wasn't sure just where the gussets would end up at the time.
I think I will continue the line of those gussets on! Very Happy

We did decide to go with the 3/16th's thickness
Instead of the quarter inch material
3/16's IS plenty strong! And saves a little weight over all.

Yeah, I did use 100% coverage with the welds
Wire feed is Too much Fun !!! Laughing

Just 1/2" welds in the strategic locations would suffice!

Anyway all in all, the tank, (especially filled) weighs quite a bit!
That's a lot of Propane !

And it is only held on the 2 ends.
So I wanted the support to be ample.

We'll get it all painted up.
I want it to blend in as much as possible,
So all will be painted with POR 15 black.
More pic's to come! Razz

Cant wait for the Propex to be a hummin' !!!
(Cold as AK here !!! )
(&&& ... at least you guys have Sarah to snuggle in with !!! Laughing

Waiting on some Rust Bullet Paint.
Now, I need to decide which side of the bus
this should be installed on Question

the drivers side is traditional
But, I think the only reason it's on that side
is so that it is close to the stove and fridge
in the Westy's.

It would make more sense to me to
have it on the passenger side.
to counter balance all of the weight
that has to be located on the drivers side.

This would go a long way in reducing the
drivers side lean Exclamation

But all of the connections; regulator, fill valves etc
May be in the way of entering and exiting the sliding door Question

I suppose the thing to do is to
tie it to my trans jack adaptor on my floor jack,
& raise it up into position
and take a look. Rolling Eyes

Hi All,
Well, got it temporarily installed.
I had to trim the front mount a little.
But no big problem!
Looks pretty good sitting there.
Plenty of ground clearance.
I decided to go with installing it on the passenger side.
I have a Carat and no stove or fridge
on the drivers side.
I will only be fueling a Propex heater.

Nice set-up, keping the tank at the stock height to avoid losing ground clearance is the way to go, is yours now exactly the same as the stock tank or do you have more ground clearance than with the stock tank?

Could you measure how far it is from the surface of your workbench to the top of the brackets you made?

Hi jackbombay,

The brackets are about 7" tall.

But what is important is that they
position the tank to within 1/8"
between the top of the tank
and the floor of the bus.
The tank sits as high as possible!

The ground clearance, I'm sure is
as good or better than a stock Westy's !
Even though the Oversize propane tank
is a larger diameter. (than stock)

That's because, I'm running 2" taller GoWesty Springs
with oversize tires.

In fact, I have plans to go with even taller tires.
Because I am installing a 2.5 Subbie with Auto trans.

Taller tires should help with the gearing as well.

best,

PS: used your shocks on my Syncro Pop Top
They were great !!! Very Happy

My oversize tank is sitting here now. The bottom of the protector plate is going to be a full 9 1/2" below the floor with the tank shoved up to about an eighth inch of hitting. I don't know if it's the same as a Westy, but the Riviera I have measures the same way at 7". I suppose you could modify the protector plate and whatnot and come up with another quarter to half an inch, but it just doesn't seem worth it. The tank itself (outside) is about 8"x42".

Edit- OK that's assuming you trust the brackets welded on the side of these. Tipped back to where the vapor nozzle comes straight out instead of pointing down a bit, and the welded plate marked TOP conveniently then is actually dead center top, I now get 9" on the nuts. The side brackets are way off though. I don't think I'll end up using them, but I won't decide tonight.

>>>OK that's assuming you trust the brackets welded on the side of these.
If you're talking about the OEM Brackets on the Ends of the BD Oversize Tanks; I Absolutely Do Trust Them. Exclamation
And there's not going to be anything stronger than the shape of the propane cylinder that's in between them.
My opinion (& everybodys got one, I know ) Laughing
Is that the weak link in Any attachment is the floor of the bus.

Looking good John! I'll be addressing my tank tomorrow. Just need to cut down the end brackets to gain back that space, paint the other brackets we welded up and slap it in! I really want one on each side. One dedicated to future Propex and the other for my swing out rear mounted 'Chuck Wagon' Bar and Grill.

I just got mine delivered today! Man this thing is huge and a much better deal than replacing the smaller Manchester tank on my Adventurewagen. I am glad I was not to late to the party before they sold out Cool

Do you have a reasonably accurate way of measuring the diameter? BDs website says 2.5 times the size of the stock tank, which is close to 4 gallons, which puts this oversized tank at ~10 gallons, but someone posted here that the tan is 7.5 gallons, but 8X42 comes out to 9.1 gallons. I'm sure it somewhere between 7 and 10, but thats almost a %50 difference Laughing

Yep, the outside diameter is 8", I just put some squares up against it, initially I just wrapped a tape around it and got 25 1/4". The body itself is 37 3/8" going by the welds, almost 39" before the curvature of the end caps take over, maybe 38 3/4" if you're really picky. Overall length of 42" to the outside of the end caps, 43" to the outside of the brackets. I don't know the wall thickness on this, and have no scale to weigh it. Have fun with the calculations. I'll say around 8 1/2 volume wise, though how much propane you can safely stuff in there, beats me.

Thanks for the numbers!

Comes out to 8.1 gallons (assuming 1/8" wall thickness") of total volume, and at %80 full thats 6.5 gallons of propane.

The stock tanks hold about 2.5 so that make BusDepot right that this tank hold 2.5 times as much if it is close to 6.5.

I just picked up a 2 stage regulator
and was reminded by the salesman
that the screened overflow area
as seen in the first picture,
Should point Down!
This helps keep water & crud out!
( and the regulator working )
( thought I ought to pass that info on. )
see pic:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This will have it looking like it's been mounted on it's side.
but that's the proper way !
( on an RV )

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Also, the brass connector fitting that goes into
the propane tank valve
should be one that has an overflow valve in it.
This helps keep the propane from rushing out
if there were to be a hit that breaks
the regulator off!

BTW, I like the way Zoltan mounted the Regulator
up above the valves! Smile
And will be doing that myself!

Awesome. I like how you tied the regulator in using those fixtures. Is that sturdy enough as is or do you plan to affix the regulator in any kind of additional manner?
