Aloha
I have a 84 westy with a 1.9 motor with a aux battery hooked up to a go westy isolator The newer one. I was thinking of maybe of getting a bigger alternator to charge the aux battery maybe a little faster when driving. I have a powered cooler and would like a faster way to keep the battery topped off. I have a deep cycle gel battery that is pretty powerful. Just looking for options before i go solar.
Leads on where to get a bigger alternator?
Mahalo for the help

Hi,

I got mine at quality power. Had it for several years now. No issues. You will need to upgrade your wiring.

Hope this is helpful.

Jim.

Are you using the gowesty relay and your own system or the whole gowesty charging kit?

If you're using the whole kit, when I switched to an automatic control relay and heavier gauge wiring, I gained about .5 volts of charging power. That's a lot relatively and probably a better investment than a bigger alternator. I'm far from an electronics wizard, just my opinion.

I am happy with the 28mm internal adjustable voltage regulator I put in recently. I am charging at 14.2 volts now. Less than $40 shipped and 5 minutes to put in.

Check and clean/replace grounds first and consider replacing your alternator cables; there is a lot of resistance in 30+ year cables no doubt.

Hi,

It’s the wire from the starter to the alternator. GoWesty sells an alternator harness upgrade kit. As usual, GoWesty supples lots of information:

Make your own and make it bigger.

I have the go westy alt harness already installed put it in a while ago. I’m just looking for a way to maybe charge my six battery faster. I live on a small island so distant driving is not a way to charge.

Hi,

I’m using an alternator to battery charger. A newer option is a battery to battery charger. Here are some links to popular options:
