|
|
Just been to do the MOT (English requirement) on my doka and it was a none starter, we can not find the vin, I have all the correct paperwork but just can not find it - nor the paint and spec codes. Any ideas? My bay had the vin on the the dash board and codes under neat near the stearing column.
Hope some one can help.
Thanx

Stef,
Many times the VIN is attached to a metal plate on the inside, and in front of the passenger side door.
It should definitely find it stamped in the frame/support.
Crawl under the passenger side, near the front jack lifting point and behind the front wheel well. Scrape away the undercoating or crud, and you should find the VIN. (You will be underneath the van, looking towards the front).
Good luck

Were you able to check under both seats? There's an M-code plate under there,
well there's suppose to be. Mine didn't have the plate, but there are a couple of
holes for where it was suppose to be riveted in.
Hope this gives you some help.....................Good Luck!! _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

WHS^
On a LHD - metal plate on A pillar on passenger side at 'knee'height.
Paper sticker under fuseboard.
Stamped on chassis leg where matey says.
From what i can gather the very last syncros were given to military with no VIN numbers in 92. |

If we're talking about the German army, I sincerely doubt that.
passenger side on front beam would be my guess as well, that's where my 92 syncro's got his VIN.

"Your van was built between 31.05.1992 and 30.06.1992. There were other VIN numbers after your van, approx. 7300 that were built between then and the end of 1992 (mainly 2WD but some Syncro). They also built some vans with the leftover parts, without a VIN number for the German military. That means that you have one of the last Syncros but not THE last one. There are no documents about THE last one that has been built. The red Syncro that is located in the Puch Museum in Graz was also built in the middle of 1992, but its VIN number is definitely NOT the last one, it has only been declared as last one."
You decide. |

now, that's rather interesting indeed. I've heard of "un-VINned" vans delivered to US-forces in Germany, but never anything of such cars in the German military.

Maybe, since the last ones were built in a different country and by a different company?

Apparently, this is humbug.
From what I could find out at short notice, the assembly line in Graz (Austria) was diassambled in the afternoon of the last day of production (20th of November 1992) and shipped to Poland, where it is said to be standing about idly every since.
No "unVINned" vehicles have hence ever left the Graz assembly line, although such rumours have been circulating for quite some time. Whether any 2WD lacking VINs have been assembled in Germany is uncertain, although most people in the know I asked seemed to think it unlikely.

All syncros were built in another country (Austria) and by another company (Steyr-Puch). Syncros will have a G somewhere in their VIN where 2WDs will have a H (for Hanover).
To the best of my knowledge, the only other country apart from Austria and Germany where T3s were cobbled together was South Africa, but they did not build syncros (I think) and certainly not any cars intended for European or American markets. Which is why it is a right pain to register one of the 2.6i beauties from down there up here. If you know what I mean

Yes, that is what I was referring to. A German VW official might easily refer to SDP as "they". Since the writer also referred to the Puch museum in Austria and downplayed the status of a vehicle in it, his usage of "they" seems fitting.

thanks mate. interesting reading.
I know of a few syncros that have been registered in 93 (including one 16"), but all of those have been built in 92.
The apparent rumours about unofficial cars stem from this book, I've been told: http://www.amazon.de/VW-Transporter-Stefan-Doliwa/dp/3613020246. For whatever reason (and this does indeed invite speculation, I give you that) VW would not provide any numbers or statistics to the author, who instead relied on hearsay.
has anyone actually ever seen, or even owned a T3 without VIN?

Thanx - firstly I have found the VIN - it should have been on the passenger door frame - about knee hight - but only rivet holes left. It is also stamped into the frame just besides the jack point - passenger side. Could not see any thing on the fuse box at all. My Doka is a 1984 LHD - not a syncro.
Secondly looks like some history issues - I will leave you too it chaps - I know nothing.
