Haven't driven the van much lately for various reasons, so I decided to drive to work the other day just to exercise it a little. Started it up, went back in the house to get the wallet I'd forgotten to grab and as I walked toward the van, I see coolant running/dripping from the driver's side of the engine compartment.
Shut her down and got the flashlight for a look-see, and was dismayed to think that my heads had finally failed. Coolant was dripping all along the engine case on the driver's side, looking for all the world like the gasket had failed. Well, crap.
Went to work on my other car, did a little poking around on the Samba during lunch, and came across a post mentioning that if one of the small coolant hoses attached to the water pump failed, it would drip from the engine case, mimicking a gasket failure. Hmm, Dare I hope?
Yes, I dare hope! Turns out this little $7.95 "H Pipe - Water Pump" hose was the culprit.
$8 for the part, $7 for Priority Mail shipping, and I'm munching cookies after wrestling that hose into place. Fire it up, no leaks! _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

Boo-ya. Thank goodness for small miracles.
The starter has always hesitated and struggled when starting my pass van ever since I bought it a few mohths ago. I've been plotting and studying how to fix it, looking at the price of starters, etc.
I returned a bad wheel cylinder to Napa yesterday, and they wanted me to exchange for other products. I didn't really need anything, so I grabbed a ground cable to change my engine ground strap, and lo and behold it starts like a champ after installing an $8 part!
After struggling with these vans over and over it's nice to get some cheap (and easy) payback every once in a while.
Congratulations on your victory. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."
