You were in a great position here to document this conversion, which as far as I know, no one has done.

You could have helped the folks in the future who would want to do this swap, by posting your procedures with pics of what you're doing.

Photos of the problems you're having sure would have been nice, and how you resolved it.

I really am pulling for you to get everything running perfect, and when that does happen, I expect there will just be a post simply stating "ok, everything finished".

Who is this guy that sold you all those parts you were thanking so much ? I would be pissed off too if I bought all his shit and got no help. Why are you thanking him for taking your money and leaving with no support ? I agree you should post a bunch of pics so we can help you and all the others that want to do this conversion.

that support bridge with rectangular tubing and no bolt holes would have inspired a redesoign--fat 90* angle iron is king against the vanagon frame around the shocks--plus the whole engine is cantilevered out of balance with a trans that wasnt designed to truss something alive that outweighs it.unless it gets rear mounts too-
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

hey schwabach--you cant really reshape the coolant hoses like that. I totally redesigned my aqueduct system--it has more than twice the hose clamps though. I have never seen anyone reshape old nylon tubing like that-- I have straitened bends in smaller nylon fuel and vacuum tubing that slips over barbed fittings--
just email tom and eric directly-- tom did my harnass and was very helpful [2.2] they don't always look at these threads, especially when they are extra busy-- I only got a look again today, and youre flipping out about the scorpions--man--you just can't have a deadline for these things--it takes what it takes, and you teach yourself with consultations and reading stuff--its a trial at best.
I earlier said this was my favorite suby engine-- I just have never installed one. true, the harnass will be different for the six cylinder, but this package needs food and water, just like all the others. obd 2 right?

you need a factory manual for subaru, if ou havent got one already- They describe the downstream lambda sensors and their wire sizes and colors. this is like school, with your nose in the book.
I will eventually build complete harnasses for 1990+ vanagons as a byproduct of my current project. that is really an arduous step replacing the nerve system.
you may need to buy 13' [x2 =26' of flex hose like laurence used [marine hose] [tom's friend on their site] and run that from radiator to engine with industrial clamps. youlle have to clamp it up, away from the axles.
is your clutch assembly okay? blowing a line asks this--
we all care about your project, but I wasnt sure where you were located until the last 2 pages.
you need to learn to cuss in japanese too. der langst

I started the van today. Engine runs great. I'm having an issue with the ignition wires, and the clutch wont move. I pushed on the clutch petal a little too hard, and blew out the plastic line.

If anyone still gives a fuck about my project, I'll go into more detail.

This is a strong and sad statement, no one owe you nothing here???

Sorry but your not getting any suggestions from me.

I never ask anything here and if I do, I do it politely.

I think you should read the Subaru Infestation thread after making that statement.
Not only does it cover the EZ30d install with RJES, but has a number of upgrades being done to a Syncro van as well.

Wait just one minute.
I don't think the OP is pointing the finger at vendors here.
And I hope he is not.
I may be wrong but I feel he is upset that the vast knowledge base here on the Samba hasn't quickly answered all of his questions Rolling Eyes.
Don't hold your breath Domo.
I know of less than 10 people who have worked on or have done this conversion.
I personally have seen and installed this motor and bellhousing as per the documentation that he has been given.
The info. is not a step by step instruction manual......rather a guide to keep the process moving.
You have to be able to freely think about issues you come across and fabricate and customize for your personal needs while you work.

If you want a "kit" that bolts in, get a Bostig Exclamation

Be realistic people.
If you do not have an above average mechanical ability and tools to match....converting may not be as easy as one thinks Shocked

No, I'm not pointing at venders in particular, just anyone in a knowlegable position.
Actually having a complete guide to this install would be a bonus. Having all the parts would be good too. Being able to find the parts you need would also be good.
Not having 4 Subaru dealers thinking your crazy and refuse to order you parts or even return your phone calls would be nice.

Please don't think I'm pointing fingers at vendors. Eric has been more than helpful getting me started. Hell, he sent me both engine harnesses for free when they would cost me $600 Euro here. The problems I'm having have nothing to do with his parts.

I have zero experience with 'pull' clutches. So, naturally, I ask the collective for advice. No response.
I'm not an expert with electical. So, once again, I ask the collective. No response.

I'm just frusterated that I was promised help and support, both on-line and IRL, and for the most part, it just was not there. With the exception of my co-worker who came out twice to help with wiring, I have done this project ALONE. Und im eine andere sprache!

I loved that thread! But with all due respect to the great work on that one-of-a-kind van, it's really more of a unique syncro van build up thread than anything else.
If I was to convert to 3.0, the only similarity between my van and Derek's would be the long block and a vanagon emblem somewhere on the body exterior.

For the average Joe Schmo who wants to convert to 3.0, what part of that thread documents his needs?

When doing my first suby conversion one of the biggest considerations was coolant routing options.
I don't think there's one word about this.

Another major factor is harness work/hookup.
(something Domo apparently had trouble with).
I don't remember a word about that either, with the exception of o2 sensor placement.

No, there is still no 3.0 install that's been documented as a guide for the average guy, not that I've seen anyway.
Wish there was, because I had, still have, money sitting right here to do this swap as soon as I think that I'll actually be able to do it.

Ok, Levi- heres an update.
Coolant lines- I pulled off the front rubber hoses, cut them in half, and used one half for the front and the other half for the back. I had to have my co-worker help me, but we sprayed the fuck out of the plastic coolant pipes with WD-40, and pulled them forward 1/4 inch at a time. Two hours later, we had them in position. I then spent 4 days and a million zip-ties heating the pipes with a heat gun, and zip-tieing them to something untill they cooled. It came out ok, but I was shitting myself the whole time as I was terrified one of them would break.
In the end, it all worked out.
Next weekend, my co-worker is going to weld brackets on to the frame at the carrier bar mount because I have little confidence in the frame right there. Stronger is better. I will post pics if I remember to take the camera next time I go to work on the van. I will gel a better video too!

The EZ 30 and 36 are not "average Guy" conversions.
They are the newest motors and conversion parts available.
That comes at a price, a much higher one than lets say a Subaru 2.2.

As we have seen here on the Samba in different threads, some converters feel they can blattenly rip off all the R&D and hard work from vendors products and call it there own and try to profit from it.
Most vendors and conversion specialists like myself have been on top of this since day one and will not stand for it.
Information sharing has slowed to a trickle recently because of this.
Myself included.
I'm over it.
Not many truely understand the amount of passion, time and expense that must go into designing and building conversion parts and kits.
Having all of that poached by someone really sucks Exclamation

FYI, many build threads have been trimmed and edited from the original posts.

Again,
I will gladly consult or convert vans for clients.
I charge for these services.

Thats for damn sure! This has tested me on everything I thought I knew, and taught me some things I didn't know...

insyncro wrote:

As someone who has done this conversion himself, mostly by himself, I do understand. There were many times I just wanted to quit. But then I just couldn't stand the waste of everything I had done, everything I had spent, and the begging I had to do to Eric to get the parts in the first place!
So, after taking a day or two off, I got back into it.

Tomorrow I will install the new clutch line, bleed it, and pray that I got the thrust bearing seated properly this time. (Is it still a thrust bearing when its a 'pull' clutch?)

Yesterday I went out to the van and bled out the clutch line. I got it all finished and bolted back into place, put my foot on the clutch petal, and pushed. There was a brief moment of resistance, then the petal sinks to the floor! I get out and look at the slave- NO HOSE! Just popped right off! Oh well. I'm glad I ordered another one. It should be waiting for me at the dealer on Monday...

Today I had another co-worker come out and help me.
(In the last two weeks, I had to tow the van to a proper shop on base to finish the work. The farmer who's barn I was using wanted it back.)
We dropped the engine carrier so we could add brackets to the frame.

I'm sorry, Eric, I just don't have confidence in that tiny edge of the frame to hold that heavy motor!

Also, I kinda turned one side into swiss cheese 'cause I couldn't drill the hole right!

So my co-worker was a welder in the Army for 22 years. Good enough for me!

We ran out of time today, but tomorrow we will finish the welding, then I will be able to drop the trans and reset that thrust bearing.
While he was prepping the sub-frame, I took some pics of how I solved problems. First was the power steering low-pressure line-

I scavenged a metal line from the Subi for that!
Then there is the nylon coolant lines-

And-

Here is the fuel rail connections. You can see what I mean by 'triangle' shaped. BTW- anyone know what I connect the breather tube to? It's a pulse vacuum.
