We have had a lot of forum members asking about the DPD A/C system and in particular most people suggest using a newer style compressor to reduce the load on the engine. We have made a video showing the compressor cycling while the engine is at idle. We installed a vacuum valve and electrical relay to remove the 5 degree retard (DVDA only) when the compressor is on. This gives the engine a power boost when at idle with A/C on. At this point we are very happy with the performance of the DPD system.

Her first question was "would the seat go back any more". I told her the car was bigger when I first got it (age 11).

In the process of getting the car ready for a road trip to see my older brother and sister. While adjusting the points and setting the ignition timing, I discovered the engine had 3/16 of an inch of crankshaft end play. Watching the V belt pulley with engine idling the crankshaft was cycling in and out, amazed it was still running. Also noticed that when I push in the clutch pedal the engine RPM increased (now I understand it was the timing being advanced as the crankshaft moved in relation to the distributor gear). This was the second time I have had to address end play since overhaul. I re-shimmed it about 7,000 miles earlier. Was only able to get it to .006. I am sure the number 1 main bearing has machined its way into the bearing saddle. With my Dad's help, we developed a fix to allow me to continue to run the engine a few more miles so I can have a chance to get another crankcase ready to swap. The fix is a bracket mounted under the generator bracket, fuel pump, and case half bolts. This bracket supports an adjustable roller bearing that rides against the A/C pulley face.

Works really slick and can be removed for belt change with just one bolt.

Now that the crankshaft end play has been addressed, we are off on a road trip with my younger brother Micah!

We removed the engine and started teardown. Will post pictures of old engine once the cylinders are removed. We plan to use the cylinders and pistons on the new build. Here is a picture of the car being backed into the shop for engine removal.

Here is an update. The replacement engine is finished, installed and tested for about 400 miles. It runs very good. We installed hydraulic lifters and a new camshaft. The difference is awesome. Engine is very quiet and smooth. This initial setup on Crankshaft End Play was .003.

Replacement engine teardown.

VW Spring Fest at Bob Beck's VW in McKinney, Texas. Car is still running perfect. It was cold and looked like rain, but the rain held off and we had a good time.
