PostPosted: Sat Nov 06, 2010 9:11 pm    Post subject: Greg's '63 Ragtop Build Reply with quote

This project has changed it's course since this thread was started. It will no longer be built as a Herbie replica or a Herbie whatsoever. The reasons for this are explained on page 7. I decided to add this notice rather than delete or edit this entire thread. Thank you for checking out our build.

Ok. So here's the deal. You clicked on it so you knew what you were getting yourself into. If you're a Herbie hater, please move along and don't comment. Otherwise please enjoy a father-and-son project and feel free to throw in your 2 cents. I thought I would have a build thread with pics for everyone to enjoy, pick apart, look at in disgust, whatever else......

I have been a VW enthusiast for years and took a long hiatus to build some American Iron. When both of my kids asked "Who's Herbie?" when my wife and I were having a conversation, I realized that I had to share with them one of the greatest movies of my childhood. After seeing the original movie, they were hooked. They both begged and pleaded with me to build a Herbie of our own. I started looking for and found an original '63 Ragtop, original L87 Pearl White car close to home. Needless to say, we had to have it. So here is our build up of our very own Herbie. If things seem like they're moving slowly, it's either due to funds or the fact that I'm letting my boys (8 and 5) do as much of the work as possible. This is (hopefully) going to be the ultimate "father and son(s) project". I'm going to try to build an accurate representation but I'm not going to be going overboard. Please chime in with recommendations but please do not take offense if I do not follow them. Thanks for checkin' things out.

Yay! It's actually a '63. I'm so tired of seeing 'herbie' super beetles and such. Those are the only ones I have problems with.

I'm in West Sac. Isn't it great having the kids help? They're more driven than I am at times!

Great plan. Wish my boys were young again so we could take on a build.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

That's great! We are doing the same thing, but with a 65. Sorry LeviMan2001. My son who was 5 when we started about two years ago is also a big fan. We originally barrowed the movies from the library but now own them even the 1997 remake. We also were able to see the newest on at the Drive in when it was out.

It's cool you have the kids out there working on it like that. They are going to learn so much from this. I have the engine torn apart right now and my son can name all the parts. His mom who the car is actually for doesn’t know half of them.

I think it's awesome that you are doing this with your sons. While they think they are just building a car with Dad, in truth they are building memories to cherish their whole lives. Keep up the good work, Brotha.
