Hi all,
new here, but glad to have found this site.
I just picked up a Fiberglass buggy back in September. From what I have found on the net, it is a Hunter. It is a 1964 car with a 1973 engine. A little more info here... http://hunterdunebuggy.com/default.htm
I have two young daughters and recently sold our snowmobile that we used to all enjoy. My girls are getting too big and I can't take all 3 of us on a snowmobile anymore and I wanted something that we could all have fun with as a family. I had a '72 beetle back in the early 90's, but sold it after 2 years of use and I thought a buggy would be a good project/hobby for us today. So I bought one with the $$$ from the sale of the snowmobile.
Here are some pics. It is filthy and needs a new paintjob. I am in the process of putting on new king-spindle assemblies and front shocks. I also have to clean up the wiring, fix the gas gauge, clean/chrome up the engine, replace all the brakes and a whole bunch of other minor things.
Thanks for looking! |

With that air cleaner - it looks like there's a V8 hanging off the back.
Pair of snow machine skis on the front/chains on the back .. and you're back in the snow, eh?
Have fun.

Wow, cool buggy!
When I saw the thread, I initially thought it is a 'fire engine' buggy, like the old GP Whizzwheels by Corgi

Firebuggy
This is great research! I had no idea these buggies existed "in real life" and found the website http://hunterdunebuggy.com very interesting. The pictures of the "behind the scenes" with the camera mounted to the buggy was cool.
You'll have to compile this info into a book that you can display with your buggy at shows. _________________ BuggyMeister.com

In my opinion that is the best looking buggy bodies ever made. Some of my friends owned them back in the 80s. A friend of mine who passed away has one sitting in his basement with a stroked GTI engine in it. |

Come to think of it, another friend made a hard top complete with gull wing doors. He drove it all winter long. We used to go everywhere in that thing. |

Is there still that big Cart track in Whitby? I've been away for 20 years.

Cart track is gone. My neighbour used to own it before his business went bankrupt. It is now covered in ugly houses instead. |

thanks Carlos! There are actually black plexiglass covers that go over the headlights, but the cops will stop you everytime they see you as it is illegal here to have any kind of covering over your headlights. |

Finally starting to warm up here enough to work on my buggy. So far I've removed the front K/L Spindle assemblies, tie rods and front shocks. Removed entire front end drum brake assemblies. Removed engine which has a couple of oil leaks here and there but nothing major. Probably from the silicone the PO put inbetween the valve covers and other places. Removed rear shocks and had one snap into 2 pieces. Cleaned out rear of tranny where the clutch release bearing is...man it was filthy in there. Sand and tree needles. PO must have done lots of off roading.
So far this is my list of things to do...
1) Replace single master brake cylinder with a dual.
2) Replace all brake parts on all 4 wheels (cylinders, shoes, adjusters, springs, etc...)
3) Replace all rubber brake lines with SS ones.
4) Carb kit
5) Engine Seal kit including Fly Wheel Seal
6) Drain/Refill tranny with oil
7) Replace oil filter screen
Find problem with gas gauge not working and replace bad parts
9) Replace Emergency Brake handle (Current one is UGLY)
10) Replace seat belts
11) Replace all 4 shocks
12) Replace electric fuel pump and use the mechanical one.
13) Replace Gland nut
14) Replace Clutch Bearing (The one in there is kind of rusty)
15) Replace Alternator belt
16) Replace all wheel bearings
17) Replace Clutch arm assembly (arm, bushing, cross shaft, etc)
1 Replace tie rods and tie rod ends.
19) Replace swingaxle seals and boots (again PO siliconed the boots to tranny and they leak!)
20) Remove fuel filter from rear of buggy and replace with new one at the front.
21) Replace rubber fuel lines.
And a few other odds and ends including some cosmetic stuff. Debating whether or not to replace the oil cooler and I should really redo all the wiring, but I think I'll leave the wiring for next winter. I have most of the stuff sitting in boxes that I ordered over the winter. Just need some more warmth and time to get at 'er!
If anyone thinks I forgot something, please chime in. |
