Great thread. I'm trying to decide whether or not to do my '66 sea blue bug wheels in the factory blue white and black or use sea blue and black. Anyone tried this??

X2... ditch the rings, they are slick on their own.

I have seen '66-'67 wheels painted two-tone with body color and white and they just don't look right IMHO. Smoothies are one thing, but vented wheels are another.
If you're serious I might suggest do a test wheel first before you go all in.

That's exactly why I'm choosing to go with pre '66 rims on my '66. To me, they just look more classy and "right" on pre '67's. Slotted wheels with flat caps just don't do it for me.

Agree 100%

Though many people compliment my EMPI's, I'd still prefer to switch "up" to a set of freshly painted smoothies any day. Heck, I'd do an even swap with somebody who didn't care for their stock rims. (Hint, Hint) Laughing

Here's mine->

Centers are L87 Pearl White while the outer rings are a mix of the Agave green with a little bit of black. I couldn't find the color VW used so I got a little creative, not wanting to repeat the Agave on the outer ring.

The vented rims are ugly regardless, but when I had a choice between plain ugly and 2-tone ugly, I opted for the 2-tone.

Nice Smile Where did you get the L87 Pearl White?

Our local auto paint shop has PPG paint chips from the 60's to got the codes from and mixed it in single stage urethane.

As for the trim rings, its my dad's car and thats what he likes. Verts, Ghias and deluxe busses came with that style of trim ring so they are "somewhat" correct on smoothies. The oval is black so black and white wheels were a little bland by themselves, the trim rings add a little more class.

imo the only reason those are ugly is because they are painted the non factory color.
