VW color codes changed very little through the years. So you can use an older diagram that has a vehicle layout if that would help you. Such as this one:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bug_std_super_72.jpg
anyway, I quickly wrote this up:
Brown - grounds
Brown/white - goes to switches that connect to ground.
Gray - front parking lights 58
Gray/black - left rear parking light 58
Gray/red - right rear parking light and license light 58
Black/green/white - Turn Signal Flasher relay to Turn Switch. 49a. Also can be Blue.
Black/green - Right Turn Lights
Black/white - Left Turn lights
Black/red - Brake light
(note, the wires going from the junctions in back to the rear lights change colors. At the tail light lens, black is the turn signal, red is the brake light, blue is the reverse light, gray for the parking light, gray/blue for the license light)
RED is Terminal 30 - has power all the time whether the key is on or not.
BLACK is Terminal 15 - has power only when the key is on. Ignition Coil, choke, reverse light switch, dash lights, power to the brake light switches, fan blower, are some of the things that use this.
Green - is also a terminal 15 wire to the emergency flasher switch. And there's a green wire in the wiper wiring 53e. (and voltage regulator DF is green on cars with generators)
White - Emergency flasher switch to turn signal flasher relay. "+"
Black/Yellow - Terminal X - has power only when key is on. Powers the headlights. Also - Horn as well as Wiper 53b.
Red/Black, then Red - starter terminal 50
Yellow - Left headlight high beam 56b
White - Left headlight low beam 56a
Yellow/Black - Right headlight high beam 56b
White /Black - Right headlight low beam 56a
Blue - dash light for charging system
Blue/white - dash high beam light, dash defogger light
Blue/red - dash blinker arrow light
Blue/green - dash oil light |

This is perfect! PO did a hack job in the trunk to get his stereo in - this will help me repair the wiring in my trunk tomorrow with very little trouble.
I really hate squinting at wiring diagrams upside down in the trunk. My eye doc has been telling me for the last 5 years "You know, as we APPROACH our forties, our eyes just don't seem to focus they way they used to up close." Yeah, approached, and passed, buddy. Upside-down in the trunk those damn reading glasses keep slipping off my nose, then I bump my head on the lid when I stand up to get a better look.
Thanks so much! _________________ '66 Beetle, in restoration
