I don't know what is supposed to be going on with my intake, but obviously I am missing some sort of airbox or something? There is a hose that comes out of my oil tank, right next to the filler cap, that I can tell from other pictures should be leading into the airbox somehow. What am I missing out on, and what should I do?

You are missing the air cleaner, the air cleaner stand, the large rubber pipe between the air cleaner and carb, the preheater pipe, and the breather hose from the oil filler to the air cleaner neck. I'll markup a photo and post it unless someone beats me to it.

so what are the pros and cons of what I have going on? Why would the PO do that? I can't seem to find much in the way of replacement parts, where should I be looking? |

Most people who replace the stock setup with an aftermarket cleaner are looking for more performance, but there are better ways to get power out of your mill.
Pros of your current setup are that it should flow a little more air than the stock setup (Restrictive neck), and you may get a little better gas mileage because it will lean the mixture.
Cons are:
1. You will get a leaner mixture which can also make your engine run hotter, and possibly cause a stumble as you leave from a stop. This is not from so much from extra air flow, but is more due to not having the air damper in the neck of the stock air cleaner.
2. Poor warm up due to missing the preheater. This heats the air coming into the carb.
3. Oil leaking onto your right side heater hose, like in the picture. That oil breather is the exit for engine blowby gasses, and with the heater on, those fumes can be sucked into the cooling shroud and blown into the passenger compartment.
4. Your filter will get wet when it rains. The factory system keeps water out, even if you have no decklid, or are missing the rain tray such as yours (I took my rain tray out too, don't feel bad).
The major parts you can get here from Dave, the big hose can be ordered online, and the small hose can be purchased from a local auto parts store.
