i have a 64 panel van with just a bay middle seat in it. I plan on picking up a full size bed.

Would a full size matress and box spring fit thru the back hatch? 1 at a time thru the back hatch.

thank you

I guess it depends what you consider a full size bed, my King would not fit through Very Happy

Twin/single bed-------39 inches
Double-----------------54 inches
Queen-----------------60 inches
King-------------------76 inches

I picked up a full size bed in my 15 window. Definately would not fit through the back hatch! I folded up the mattress taco style and it fit through the cargo doors but no dice on the box. Good thing I have a full size roof rack on the bus! Box got strapped on the roof.

Not through the hatch. The interior is big enough to hold it, the trick is fitting it through the openings. The full (double) mattress width is 54", the hatch opening diagonal is about 51", and the mattress has thickness, too. A full size mattress or box spring will probably fit in through the cargo doors on a diagonal. The mattress is easy because it bends, the box spring is the hard part, but I bet it would make it.
[ Edit: I defer to derluftwagen 's just-posted experience if he says the box spring won't fit. ]
If you plan to try it, take out the seat, it will get in your way. If possible, try a test fit at home with an existing mattress while you have time to fiddle around before you show up at the store and find out it won't quite make it ...

It might even be possible to squeeze a queen mattress in through the cargo doors and bend it around the corner, but it would be very tight.

I pulled some dimensions from a '65 brochure, found in the Technical section:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/65commercials/page7.jpg
I didn't verify them against actual measurements from my bus but I believe they are quite close.

rear hatch opening: 48.4"W x 28.7"H
cargo door opening: 46.1"W x 47.2"H
interior space behind front seat: 106.3"L x 59.1"W
interior height floor to top of roof: 53.1"
interior height above engine compartment: 31.5"
length of flat section above engine: 27.6"

Remember, though, that the bus has a lot of rounded corners and the sides taper toward the top, so these are maximums; actual usable space is less, and is hampered a little by the engine compartment, fuel fillter obstacle, etc.. (but even so, it's got a lot of useful space in there! Smile )

I haven't tried carrying mattresses, but we did cart some furniture around this year ... full size bed frame (disassembled) and a 5-drawer chest, and there was a LOT of room left over. The stuff was made out of ash and weighed a ton, though.

I know this was a silly question... thank you for the replies and all the info.

I just sketched out the dimensions in Autocadd with the dimensions above and the box spring won't fit thru the opening. just like derluftwagen said.

I'm going to plan on putting the mattress in the cargo area and carry the box spring on the roof. I'll bring some ratcheting cargo straps and cargo blankets.

Again, thank you for all the replies...

use caution when racheting those straps. Alittle to tight will dent the roof and a little to loose and you'll loose the box! LOL!!
