Please help !
In search for a proper nose cone for my 54 I came across this. to my knowledge this should be a BD nose ?! How come the parts nr. 21.09.9 ??
and not a 29....
and why is the cogwheel VW badge on the shifter lever?

I've read quite some threads about trannie swapping even in early split bugs but didn't get wise really. Can I use this nose ( if it is an early non synchro BD nose) on a pre59beetle straight axle split case trans (in my panel)?

It's broken was replaced with NOS so I still have it in my garage if you need any other information.

I can see your nose cone has different ribbing in the front. Could it be from a Split Beetle?

Thanx, Everett.mine could be split bug then. exactly is missing the 2 outer ribs and the later vent opening, has 2 holes instead.
I was refering the 21. code to type 2, but it obviously is the part code !
( as seen on yours, has the 29.21.09.)
That's why there's the cogwheel on the shift lever. early split bug probably. Though this came from a pile of BD specific trannie parts.
I will have to check if this will fit the 54-59 bug trannie and my bus . Will post efforts here.
regards Guenter

My 53 has the same nose cone as does Ken's 53. That particular nose cone seems to be from early BD transaxles. Not sure about my hockey stick as I have never inspected it.
See the post about halfway down on this thread.

Yes that's a non syncromesh bardnoor one (probably split bug too)

Everett's picture is a syncromesh gearbox one

I don't know if it will fit a pre 59 bug gearbox though sorry

hi Gunter,
Im pretty sure you can use that nose on an early bug box. That is exactly what Im planning and I test fitted my non-synchro nose cone on an early splitcase bug trans that was empty... it fits and everything looked good, but as the case was empty Im not 100% sure..

Like 52panelvan said, what you have is a non-synchromesh nose cone (type 1 up to September '52, type 2 up to March '53). It won't fit on a synchromesh splitcase gearbox which requires a deeper recess in the nose cone for the lower ball bearing.

Non-synchromesh:

To mount a pre '59 beetle splitcase gearbox in your barndoor bus you'll need an April '53 to May '59 bus nose cone (part number 211 301 205 A).

Thanx to everybody for the great info !!! the drawings from crashbox point out extremely nice ! I will have to check if my splitbug/early BD nose can be machined down to accept the lower bearing. first I will have to dig up one of my synchro split case bug trannies under a foot of snow or so Very Happy
@ Trevor P: I knew I had seen info already but couldn't find the above mentioned thread. I will have to study this a bit more. Man, I sure got a lot to learn about that BD stuff.

Here's a synchro trans nose cone of a 53up BD (along with the other split bug nose). Hopefully this will mount a pre 60 straight and narrow 30PS bug transmission in my 54 panel.

Hello
I update this thread, I have a 53 dlx, the transmission was changed by a later type in the 60's, the only thing I'm supposing they kept is the nose cone with ref 21.09.1 ( see my picture)
I'm now rebuilding a correct 53 with original cases and nose cone.
From what I have read there I'd have the 29.21.09. 1 ref nose cone with top cylinder breather, but when I check my 53 workshop manual I can see nose cone without cylinder breather but with 2 holes...
I also compared to my all original matching March 53 oval, the nose cone is with cylinder breather but 1 rib... 🤔
I'm lost...
My question is what was factory fitted mid 53?
Thank you for your help
Yan
