|

I've seen some advertisers list running board rubber "covers" for sale. I have a '71 SB convertible, and I was wondering if the chrome strip would come off the original running boards to so one could install these.
Has anyone tried these? _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. I know you can buy the replacement clips for the running board strips (my one set came with an extra set for the narrower chrome if I wanted to use the narrow chrome instead of the already ionstalled wide one) so I would imagine it would be pretty easy (from looking at what I have in my basement) to remove them to install new rubber covers. IIRC all you need to do is take a pair of pliers and re flatten the clips so they can slide back through the slots. You could just order some new ones in case you damage the clips upon removal (better to scrap a clip than the strip itself) |

Do you know if your running boards are genuine or aftermarket?
The original ones I have are pretty easy to remove the chrome strips from
On the back the metal clip just sticks through a slot and is twisted over to stop it pulling back through.
The aftermarket ones I had though had plastic clips which were pretty delicate and broke easy
I ended up removing the covers and painting the running boards instead _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Actually I have 2 sets, at least one is aftermarket, and both have the metal clips that are slid through a slot and twisted, thus why I said to just flatten them out and push through the slot.
I think if they are OG they might break a few, thus why I suggested having some spares. |

Renewing the question. 1971 Convertible, my running boards are original German, and in good shape except for the rubber part. So I was thinking to be "environmental" and just do covers, like in this link. http://air-cooled-vw-parts-search.mamotorworkstv.com/search?p=Q&w=running+board+covers
Has anyone used these, and if so, comments please. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I've replaced the matts using these VW OE ones from CIP1. Worked great. I'm not sure your looking at the same quality at MAMO-the VW OE ones are 2x more spendy but much better than replacing a running board with good metal, After I stripped it, covered in POR-15 and replaced the matts-a new German running board wouldn't be as good at >$100 each

I used the the same matts and refurb. Definitely the way to go. Trick is to address the boards BEFORE you see the bubbling rot coming up from underneath the matt. Once protected with POR-15 they will last longer than a new German running board |

I installed my own new VW CIP1 running board covers today, and they look great !!! Bending back the metal "crimp: that holds the seal was a hassle, as was lying on the ground to unbolt/bolt everything (especially on mine as I have 4 wires running under the running board back to the engine compartment, secured by the 10mm head 6x1.0mm bolts). On one side I had to use two new 8 x 1.25mm bolts/nuts to secure to the fensers, my old ones were off-threaded. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I did mine as well a few months back...
gave me time to sandbast the boards, weld a few spots, bondo a few spots and then paint it all back gloss black.
The chrome was a trick. Original German running board chrome clips are flat and you twist them with pliers from about a 30 degree angle to straight, aka, lined up with the running board, to loosen and then twist them back to tighten.
they look really nice now. |

The chrome trim removes very easily, just a slight twist of the metal retainers and they pop right off. The rubber mat I had to pry open the metal channel under the chrome strip to replace the mat, in order to install the new one. A bit of work but well worth it. I got mine from WW, nice quality. |

I used the budget method of covering my running boards . . .
went to the restaurant supply store and got 6 feet of 1/8" ribbed vinyl floor mat, cut to shape and glued to my de-rusted, primed and painted old running boards . . came out looking very good, in my humble and financially challenged opinion |
