|
|
I ended up following Ratwells info on the Silver Socket. I wanted a map light to look at actual text on road trips and not just the GPS! Scarry I know. So I ended up getting a euro plug off ePay and fitting it to a cheepo Pep Boys light. It worked great and at a total cost of $10 the biggest penny pincher amoung you should be happy when compared to a Hella unit at $50-for cigarette plug ins.
This map light will be updated later to feature a watage thats brighter. But for now I wanted to see if it could be done-yes it can!

These are VW accessories I found to plug in. The light is listed for sale in the Classys. I have mailed them more than once with no responce-piss off then!

I actualy have a cig type plug in under the dash. This is for the"whats that silver plug in for" crowd. The Plug in VW intended you to use. Now mind you, you can get light into the cab a multitude of was shapes and forms. Im using the og plug in the dash that we all have. _________________

notchboy,
Nice work! And good idea, making your own conversion like that.

Like notchboy, I mounted an extra socket under my dash, for "normal" plugged gadgets. I considered removing the silver socket and mounting the more conventional modern socket in its place, but that would have required drilling out the hole in the dash slightly, to accommodate the larger size opening needed. I did not want to drill/cut/molest my original dash, so left the silver socket as is. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia (Happy Trails, SOLD)

Jason
Nice write up. I thought you might find the following link to a UK supplier of interest:
http://www.germancampercompany.com/shop.php/westfa.../p_55.html
GB £14.99 = US $23.50 although I don't know what postage would be to the USA.
The OEM lights also come up on eBay UK fairly regularly, there are a couple on there now:

Plugs for the silver socket are available at New Holland (Ford) tractor dealers. About $10.00. Used to power accessory equipment on tractors; like hay baler controllers and counters. |

Its funny how many times that little deal has come up in conversation. Some people here thought that if you had it, that it meant your bus was euro spec? Then Id see that all of them were euro spec-what ever that meant.
When taking the time, I too found the adapters and extra plugs. So its good to know that if you want to use the plug-the stuff is out there.
I did look hard for the OE ones-thank you for that link! They slipped under my radar. _________________

OG is OG, but from a point of functionally, Jason's looks like a better unit, with less unwanted glare to blind the driver, and maybe even weighing less, therefore, putting less strain on the Euro-Spec/OG/NOS/Factory/stock nazi-approved "Silver Socket". Go notchboy. _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Maybe. Ive ordered the OE one to see. I bet its for sure heavier, I do hope its brighter than the 3w cheepo one I made. Its super light as its very cheaply made. Better? Maybe if it were brighter. But its cheap thin plastic case lends it to being thought of as not lasting.
Once the bulb type OE one arrives we shall see! Besides, it will be tought to be the real deal _________________
