Hello folks,
My '65 VW bug has 356B drum brakes. I have a leaking axle seal. I have the bearing cover with the seal that is accessible from the outside. On a VW, this would mean that I would need an external oil slinger. These brakes came with the car, so I am learning as I go. Should these brakes also have an external oil slinger like the VW?
Also, if anyone has a diagram that shows the seal, washers, o ring(s), etc., I would appreciate seeing it so I can be sure I have the right parts and in the correct order.
Thanks. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

Strange a similar situation came up with a guy on the DDK forum over here. He had VW backplates and 356 drums and leaking oil seal.
The later 356B drims did not need the oil slinger version with a pipe as on earlier 356 cars.
The rear hub nut torque on the VW is around 200 ftlb and the 356 drum set up has 400ft lb. Already this question was raised on samba. I would really check the value you have when you release it.
The hub system with the oil seal has to be set correctly on a 356, maybe you must get hold of a good book to see how the VW is attended to.
If you look on the link below it describes what the DDK guy did. It was not easy for him!!

There are 2 pages to this link hope it opens okay with both accessible.
Others can probably advise more. Just be aware of the torque!! and the fact you need the full kit.

I would try the Performance / Engine / Transmission Topic. Years ago this was a very popular conversion back when 356's were just another rusted out junker headed to the junk yard. I did it twice myself (64 bug, 62 ghia) but can't remember any details. |
