Hi, I'm looking for a assembly manual for the Carrington LN-33 kit car? The cars were built by David & Nancy Gray in Florida in the early 1980's. Any help appreciated, Thanks

Ken Neithken of Neithken Associates (540) 337-1777 may have something. He was the last producer of the kits.
If you have specific questions, I might be able to help as I've owned one. |

My projection headlights are the same as standard production cars, but they are recessed, which is legal, I checked first. The lower driving lamps just squeaked by at the minimum height requirements. Headlights and taillights were required, but turn signals were not. You could use hand signals for turning. My horn was an antique style, rubber squeeze ball type, which was legal. I'm sure if I drove it 10 feet across the Florida border, I would have been busted for something. |
Actually, the headlight height regulation is a NHTSA requirement for manufactures. In addition there are other NHTSA stipulations on height of tail lights as well as marker lights so oncoming traffic will recognize your vehicle as an automobile. So, your vehicle body was never intended for the street. If it was it would have had the headlight pods at least 22 inches above the road surface. You would have much better visibility if the headlights were at least 22 inches above the road surface. You could probably use the same lights but they would need to be higher than they are now. In addition, do not ever drive the car on Federal land or you could be stopped and have the car confiscated. |

Never heard of those. What body style did they replicate ?
There were literally hundreds of body styles made in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Most never caught on, but today, when you see a nice one at a car show, there's usually a crowd around it, asking what it is.

there's usually a high dollar Corvette or Mustang sitting nearby and the owner of that car is really pissed off because nobody asks about his car.

It is interesting that you ask what these vehicles replicated. They didn't replicate anything that came before. They may have been influenced but very few looked like a replica of anything. Go to Undiscovered Classics for more examples. A number of bodies could have been made to fit the full size VW chassis. The ALKEN was made to fit the full size chassis and it was very unique looking. The ALKEN was produced in 1958 and not many were made. Unlike many early kit cars the ALKEN was truly a complete body with internal bulkheads and complete weathertight wheel wells. It was factory assembled from all of the individual moldings to make a complete and rigid body. With a bit of ingenuity it could have been made to mount the VW drive train and not use the VW chassis at all. You can see a brochure at Undiscovered Classics. Many of the other fiberglass bodies that were produced that were designed for a 95.5 inch wheelbase could have been used as a VW replacement body. The earliest fiberglass "kit car" was made in 1952. See the Porsche patent for a unitized synthetic body for a Porsche sports car.

| I hate to revive a dead post, but I just listed one of these kits on eBay. My wife bought it back in 2007. When I was searching for information on this kit to put into the listing, I came across this thread and realized that the very first picture in the first post is the car my wife bought! That picture was actually used in the eBay listing back in 2007! Craziness. Anyway, if anyone here is interested, the auction number is 300787273845. I hope posting that isn't against the site rules. I just thought that was such a funky coincidence that the first picture I come across when searching for information is the same picture used to sell the car to my wife in the first place, and I had to post something. |

Sorry about that.Anyway there are hardly any for sale on that site.Even E-Bay doesn't seem to have many for sale either.I have been checking for about 14 years thats when I retired.However I already have a project I should be working on (Mels GT).
As of 8/13/11 there is one Old fiberglass body on E-Bay called a La Dawri,it's on an MG chassis..item # 130559762805.as the 14th 10:38 am it's only got 4 hours to go..

Just in Case anyone was interested there was a write up in September 1985 Issue of Petersons Kit Car.
Highlights of the article
- The car was built by a Clearwater Company called Professional Prototypes
- Kit included a subframe that stretched the car to 113 inches.

Ravinsomniac your car looks killer. I have only 1 small interjection and keep in mind that I really like the whole look. Your headlights are illegal. You can check this site and go down to page 311.http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2004/octqtr/49cfr571.108.htm
It appears that most of the GT kits have always been illegal. The minimum headlight height is 22" at center and the max is 54". Now you are probably going to be ok forever but there's always a chance you could run across an inspector or trooper with knowledge and a bee in their bonnet. I moved the headlights 4" further up on my Bradley just to make them legal. |

I liked the color of my friends Chevy truck, so I had him paint it the same color. His truck has 15 coats of red, mine only has 3. Price was a factor, and considering he OWNS the Body Shop, he can afford as many coats as he wants !
