Interesting picture. Now we have to establish ( notice the brake reservoir ) when Canadian standards got hydraulic brakes! Standard European Beetles retained cable brakes until April 1962.

Another interesting photo. We all know that up until the end of 65 model year Aug.65 that Canadian 1200A customs came with 36 hp engines. That means the pamphlet isn't entirely correct because we all know U.S. deluxe type 113's are 40 hp.

It seems to me that the Canadian Custom is not a standard at all other than the lack of trim and upholstery. Since that is the case it also seems that the CC would have also received all the upgrades the deluxe got at the same time, like larger brakes in 58, 40hp and tunnel trans in 61, fresh air heater in 63, 1300 in 66, etc.

A true euro standard is a rare thing here in the states and canada.

Having owned several Canadian customs including an August of '53 I can tell you we never got cable brakes. And yes, they got all the brake upgrades as they came out.

That slammed 58 Reseda green Canadian custom makes me very sad. These cars were just right the day they rolled off the assembly line. This whole trend of dropping cars and leaving them stock otherwise has me feeling depressed. Narrowed beams and 45 degrees of negative camber in the rear end should be reserved for fat chicks not cars so beautiful as this one.
IMHO

A Canadian Standard or 1200A or 1200 Custom is still considered a Type 111 and not a 113

Just be glad they can be returned to stock easily. Reindex the rear, bolt stock beam and your done. The crazy style of "tubbed" buses for going ultra low , raised steering boxes, narrowed torsion housings for ultra wide rims and tires, chopped out and sectioned trans hanger for trans raise are something to really be sad about!

i am restoring a german 56 ragtop standard oval.
Even the standard version could be ordered in every colour available in that year, but most of them were sold with one of the 3 standardcolours.
The Ragtophandle were chromed, so the ring of the handle was (the picture of the golde handle is from my oval, and the black ring is wrong).
Chrome trim could also be ordered.
Door handles and winders were nonchrome
The wipers were black
Tailpipes were black
Windowframes in front (Ausstellfenster) were painted in car-colour
The german version had non hydraulic brakes
Most of the semaphores were black, but i heard of some that were painted.

I also think that the canadian standard is more a deluxe than a standard. Only the interieur looks the same.

The thing why most european standards donīt have these things is only the price. The people often donīt had enough money to order extras, the people that had the money - ordered an export (deluxe).

The ragtop was very expensive, and thatīs the reason why ragtop standards are hard to find.

Standard ovals rock!!!

Ya know, I have been jonesing for standards since 1979. They were cheap or free for most of that time but now that the Americans have caught on I see I'm going to have to grab every one I can before they are all bought up for crazy money.

We have a small Canadian custom mafia here in Winnipeg, you know who you are!

BTW if you look at the bottom left you see the holy grail of canadian VWs, a zwitter standard sunroof. As of right now, none are known to exist.

Anyone know what consists of M356 Equipment for Canada?

EDIT:

Mr Dunn said in another thread he is sure his color is atlas blue metallic and that the BC is incorrect. I could not locate a pic to post showing some original paint.

There is this thing beside the heater where nothing was hook up to it when I bought the car. Look like a splitter/regulator for the gaz but I don't know. Any idea will help:

Another one that hasn't been mentioned yet just to add to the whole mix there was also a pov-pak aussie made standard beetle as well built between 62 and 67, although for some reason the 67s were called customs and even had a badge on the decklid saying 1300 Custom but they weren't quite as bare bones as the earlier standards

They were fairly similar to whats been seen here.
I'll have to try and dig up some better pics of one.

The very first ones from 62 till 64 were very sparse, had grey painted blade bumpers with no overriders, grey hubcaps and door window trim, only the center section of headliner, grey painted handles and indicator caps, no running board trim, no glovebox lid, no carpet, no steering damper, instead of the side moulding strip it was only a pin-stripe sticker. etc

The door and seat upholstery was completely smooth with white piping, they called it "Coles cafeteria" upholstry.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The dash had no glovebox lid, the knobs and steering wheel were black (this one is abit later when they changed to white) also no fuel gauge fitted but I think was an option on the later ones.

the 64-67 had a metal strip on the side only, not the hood but by then they started using chrome ones but left the bumpers and hubcaps still painted grey

This one is completely unmolested and all original except for a few primered panels.
It's Custom badge off the decklid has gone walkabout but you can see the outline where it used to go.

I am going to start the restoration of my sunroof European standard, built in September 1953. The model code designation for the car is 11E, conforming to the codes applied before 1954.
Do you know which information about the 1956 model are also valid for early oval? (for instance semaphore and wiper color?).

Here is one of the rare picture I have found of this model:

This is an original early 1955 and down rear luggage cardboard --possibly the hardest original standard only part find that is still useable/intact ---(tunnel mat close second) -- made from material similar to early type 2 above engine bay/cargo area board --- thicker than door cards on bugs. This board has access holes for luggage rail attachment --- making it an early Canadian custom piece ?????? as my German Delivery 55 has no luggage rail attachment points ---factory formed curved lip fits nice in the recess under rear window
