Standard sedans have always been fascinating to me. As a kid we refered to them as "euro" because of the semaphores and no trim. Later I realized that there were euro deluxes and euro standards as well.

I always thought that standards were sedans only until I saw these images.

I am looking for more information on Standard oval window beetles both sedan and convertible.

The following is a list of Domestic standard features.

-Limited color availability
-No chrome moldings, window trim, speedometer trim, running board trim
-Painted bumpers, door handles, hubcaps, speaker grill, inside door handles, headlight rings, and hood and trunk handles
-Only roof area headliner with no a, b, c pillar covering.
-Cable brakes
-25 or 36 hp engine
-Different transmission ratios
-Wing nut adjusters for front seats
-Black interior knobs
-Only one horn grill on drivers side
-3 spoke steering wheel
-Black windshield wipers
-Black gas cap

A question has come up regarding export standards, Canadian standards to be exact (Canadian Custom is the correct model name). I have seen several examples of Canadian customs with sunroofs and chrome trim. The sunroof looked factory with painted sunroof handle but the trim may have been dealer option. Were there any semi deluxe standards from the factory?

What other standard only parts or assembly variants are there?

Any surviving standard verts out there?

edit: adding standard specific items to list

The Karmann standard cabs were made for the german police, from the early 50' up to 1960 2105 std cabs was delivered.
Before that, mostly between 1948 and 1952, Hebmüller, Papler and Astro-Tatra made four "door" policecabs, based on standard beetles.

This is the dash of my 1959 Canadian standard sunroof. I realize it is not an oval but it will answer your question about chrome sunroof handles.

Canadian Customs look to have M-Code 001 which defines:

-Chrome body moldings
-Chrome inner/outer door handles
-Chrome rag handles
-Chrome glove box button
-Chrome hub caps
-Chrome bumpers
-Rear Carpet

What are the correct colors for standard steering wheel tube, hand brake, shifter, rear view mirror, bumper brackets, and gas tanks? Black?

This customized standard has pop outs in the rear painted black. Was this even an option on a standard?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

searching thru the gallery it also seems that if they did come with a rag the handle was chrome. Is this a Canadian only thing or did domestic standard sunroof cars also have chrome

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Seems that most standards came with cloth interior (except some canadian cars) and were all equipped with semaphores from 60 down.

Ive only seen references to (domestic) Euro standards and Canadian standards, are there any other types?

South African, Australian, South East Asia Standards? I know most of these areas were CKD kits, were they all based on a standard chassis and dressed up to local requirements?

Does anyone know:

-when bumpers and headlight rings went from painted to chrome or is this another Canadian only thing?

-When did the passenger side fender get the horn grill?

-What carpet/rubber mat do standards come with?

-Is the ash tray housing chrome or painted?

-Were painted trim items always body color or gray?

I just traded my 56 for a 55 Canadian standard. I just got the birth certificate this past week. Pretty awesome car. They even varified that the original motor is in the car. It came from the factory (per the birth certificate) with chrome side trim, headlight rings, door handles and overiders. The rear tailights where updated with larger lights but you can see in one picture where the old egg tailights where mounted. It was built on Jan 10th 1955 and shipped to Canada on Jan. 14th.

here are a few pictures.

I have a 1955 UK standard S sedan 36HP. It has the following as standard

passenger horn grill only
no front hood liner
no chrome around speedo
wing nuts to hold front seats in place
black tank, black interior knobs, black shifter and handbrake, black steering column, black wipers
painted speaker grill, quarter vent windows in same colour as car
Rubber running boards, no chrome
cloth headlining only
crash gearbox (not syncro like the deluxe)
tooth pick door handles, drivers only locking from exterior only
cable brakes originally (although upgraded recently to drums, too risky!!
rubber mats with the german oatmeal weave carpet.

Extras that were ordered from the factory
chrome bumpers, hub caps, exterior chrome trim strips, chrome headlight bezels

I think thats it!!

It did not sate a color, but it did come with a separate piece of paper that gave the color options.

It did come with hydraulic brakes, I am not sure if allof them came with it being that this is my first one. Mine came with a syncro tranny as well.

An ad had this info on a 66 standard

1966 Model 115 - VW Sedan Standard w/ Sunroof
European Delivery - Germany

What is a Standard?
The VW Beetle most Americans are familiar with is the Deluxe which was the model sold in the US. In Europe VW also offered a stripped down version of the Beetle called the Standard. It cost about 10% less than the Deluxe model.
Very few standards had sunroofs due to the added expense.

How Did a ’66 Standard Come (less) Equipped?

Ragtop instead of steel sunroof
1200 40hp “D” case engine
One speed wipers
Steering wheel lock
’65 Front Seat Frames
Early rubber floor mats
Early license light housing
Dimmer switch left on floor
Three spoke steering wheel
Fuel tank shutoff and reserve valve

Single horn grill
Smaller headliner
Short tunnel mats (2)
Painted Hub Caps
Painted Euro blade bumpers
Painted front turn signal housings
Painted door, hood, and decklid handles
Painted interior window winders/handles
Painted wind wing and window divider
Pebble grain panel / back of rear seat
Door panels without pockets

No radio
No dash trim
No fuel gauge
No side or hood trim
No running board trim
No luggage area carpet
No window rubber trim
No speedometer trim ring
No exterior lock on pass. side
No emergency blinker circuit
No dome light switches on doors
No cardboard wire cover under hood

KPH speedometer
Euro taillights
Euro Bumpers

Here is the thread on it

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=336263

Do the early standards also have the cardboard rear luggage area?

This came from another ad for Canadian Standards which I guess now do not exist!!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Long live the Canadian CUSTOM!

I guess it goes:

European Standard
Canadian Custom
Export Deluxe

Any other versions of the standard that should be listed?

what about the short tunnel mats and no dome light switches at the door? Do early standards have these traits?

Here's a 54 CDN STD I "dug" up this year. As you can see the rear has carpet not cardboard coverings. They also have no door pin switches.

IIRC the term Canadian custom came later on; possibly in the late 50's. I was told they changed it from the term "standard" cause it sounded too plain. What is the date on that brochure?

Since there is no such thing as a Canadian Standard only a Canadian Custom I will start making the list for that as well.

Do early Euro Standards have the cardboard liner

There are a number of differences between the Canadian Custom and the export de Luxe.
Many of them have been listed already, but these features also changed over the years.
In the oval era, the Canadian Standard was defined by small headliner, limited colour selection, Jupiter blue was most common, Prairie Beige as well, they never were available in black.
Breeze windows were painted body colour, no chrome trim in window rubber, no chrome strip on running boards.
Three spoke steering wheel, wingnut seat adjustment, unseamed, unpleated interior upholstery.
Post oval era, the Canadian Customs got oval steering wheels rather than three spoke and sliding seat tracks. They retained the small headliner and lack of chrome trim. They retained the peanut front signal lights longer and the small license plate light longer.
After that my knowledge drops way off, but Canadian Custom Beetles were still available into the seventies here. The post 68 Canadian Customs still had swing axle transaxles and torsion bar front ends.

Great question!
I have never even heard of the sniff of a possibility of of a CanCustom vert.
There is the occasional Canadian Custom oval rag running around up here.
Those are VERY cool rides!
Kind of a rolling conundrum as the kind of people that wanted a stripped down beetle in the 50's were generally not the type to dress it up with a rag.

I own this car now, and have copies of this pic! As a matter of fact its the desktop on my laptop!

Rare L19 Atlantic Green '53 only colour.... This body is off the chassis now and will be undergoing a slow, correct, restoration.....

I think the toughest part will be matching the '53 only green interior upholstery and figuring out what the interior panels originally were? I didn't get them with the car, any recollection Don?

I have had 4 Canadian Custom's and love them, cool mix of features...
