I have a 85 turbo diesel in my 82 Vanagon blew the cylinder head gasket. The head is warped I'am considering rebuilding the whole engine. Other options would be to get a rebuilt engine and swap them. This would not be my first swap or my first rebuild so neither scares me. I am just interested in some input on what would be the best solution. I am not that keen on the setup that is in there it seems like whoever did the td conversion originally did a pretty hokey job especially on the exhaust i would deffinetly want to fix that as well.

What does any one recommend as the best diesel engine for the 82 Vanagon? And still keeping it affordable. What if any are good exhaust solutions?

I have a 82 diesel with a 85 turbo diesel conversion.

How about a 1.9 AAZ with JX turbo and manifolds? That way you could use stock diesel exhaust components.

What td is in there right now?

Yes by the time you are replacing the head and rebuilding it is often easier to get a 'new' used engine from Quality German.

The most affordable and relatively new will be the AAZ 1.9TD. I got mine from there 3 years ago with 50K on it and frankly it was like new. you will have to get or make a custom exhaust but it is not too difficult or expensive.

I also recommed the DK (transmission out of a 80-83.5 aircooled vanagon) way better ratios, you can cruise at 60-65 mph.

Sorry that these recommendations do not fit into the 'affordable' relm, but think it more as an upgrade .....

probably not a bad option I don't personally know anything about that particular motor.

Pretty sure it is an 85 quantum turbo diesel conversion 1.6l turbo I do like the motor performance that it had but the exhaust would have to be done much better kind of rigged together and constantly having to repeatedly tighten the exhaust head bolts. I 'am sure due to nature of it not fitting correctly and vibrating the bolts loose.

When I blew the 1.6td in the Doka I ended up pulling it and installing a 1.9td. I then got the 1.6 rebuilt and its sitting in the garage incase something happens to the 1.9.

Rebuild.

If you have a hyd. head put a TDI cam/ regrind to tdi spec. I also used total seal rings. I also had the pump rebuilt with the viton seals.

LOTS more tork over stock.

good luck
