Yes the key needs to be in the Ign to make the buzzer sound
BUT, you can tap into the door pin grounding wire and use that to trip a relay when the door is open.. then the relay powered circuit would light when the door is opened.. if you run a wire across to the PS door pin you can also add in a manual switch from door pin to ground. that will turn on the interior (and exterior) lights..

LED idea...Would this work:
Use the Door buzzer already in place. Hook up lights under the stepwells of the 3 doors and maybe under the dash. Any time the door opens, these lights come on. Would the key have to be in the ignition for this? |

the light housings do in fact look like regular H4 housings I have. Mfg'd in India..
I would also be interested in a Bulbs only solution.
I'm all for what you are doing and making a couple bucks passing a deal and solution to the hobbyist.. I just have 2 H4 equipped vans already.

Are the reflectors H4 compatible (e.g. is the LED unit a H4 replacement)? If so, are the bulb assemblies (w/fan) available separately, for those who already have H4 headlights? |

Dan, thank you for your valuable input. A relay is the right move here. I looked into them more and I have used them before but not totally understood what was happening. I think a relay here could work with the lights. Ordered new door switches today and will be reporting back to this thread in early august with my results. The ideal situation would be to hook the lights up to either door switch (maybe all 3) and a manual switch. I'll have to find someone local who can help me draw a diagram, as thats the only way I can understand electric systems. _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

I don't want to sidetrack this thread..
but to hook up a light(s) to trigger with your doors. .
#30 fused +12v power in
#87 +12v power to light (relayed)
if you have an #87a then one is powered when the relay is closed and one is powered when the relay is open.
#85 -gnd to the door pin switch wire.. the door pin completes Gnd
#86 taken from the fused +12v #30 post.
then you can add a toggle switch to the wire to the door pin Gnd wire.
one side is tapped into the #85 GND wire
the other side of toggle is sent to a chassis GND screw.
light will then work Either with the door(s) OR with the toggle.

Amazing description. I think I got it all figured out except this. What does the 86 do? You connect 30 and 86 together? Or run a 12v from fuse box to 86 as well? _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

connect #30 and #86 together as you are using the GND at the door pin to 'trip' or signal the relay.
a relay is really just a highway cloverleaf interchange for the electrical current. it flows straight across the poles. and you're the traffic cop with the 'trigger' being a switch someplace in the flow. in or out..

If any of you are thinking about switching to LEDs, we'll ship you a pair with a money back guarantee. If you don't like em, ship them back for a return (no restock fee)
We've sold about a dozen of them so far and we have not had any complaints. They look almost exactly like the OG lenses and no logo or weird cross bar in the middle.

I'm curious to how loud those fans are. |
If its dead quiet (no engine running) and no ambeint noise, and you have your ear by the headlight you hear a slight fan noise (much like a computer heatsink fan noise)
However with our loud volkswagens/road noise/tire noise.
You do not hear them at all. |

hmmm, well that's good.
Well those are a full kit, LEDs with housing that pump 2500 lumens. Plug and play.
HID bulb kits run around $30 and dump 3000+ lumens. But you have to shove the ballast in the housing and do some wire cuts. _________________ Wash your hands

I'm currently testing my 3rd model of LED headlight trying to decide which to put in the bus when it's back from paint. The best I've had thus far with both pattern and output are the JW speakers, unfortunately they are also the least attractive for a vintage bus but they beat the other sets i've tried by a large margin.

However HIDs have a HUGE amp draw at startup which can fry (overtime) the headlight switch unless you add a relay.
Id HIGHLY recommend adding a Relay if you go the HID route. |

I have LEDs all over my bus, many I made out of CREE XMLs driven at 1800 mA and boy are the bright. I recently went with them on the headlights. I already had Hella H4 headlights, so after some careful research I went with these Led H4 bulbs. The whole arrangement fits in the headlight bucket just fine. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MOR4CFQ?psc=1&...ge_o00_s00 The difference is remarkable, to say the least. The light is white, not blue so there shouldn't be much trouble with the law. In fact, many modern vehicles come with this kind of light. I had 85/100 watt bulbs in before (relayed) and they burned out a lot and these LEDs are much brighter than those and hopefully they will last longer. _________________ air-cooled or nothing for me

Those are "Chinese Lumens"
"Out The Front Lumens" probably significantly less. Still, comparable in brightness to the HID conversion kits. It's all about how it's aimed. Don't want too much light aimed high, then you blind people. Don't want too much light aimed low, then you blind yourself with a too bright foreground and can't see anything else. You need the "just right". So far from what I've seen of these conversion bulbs I'm tempted. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

Good HID kits should have relays. But then again, never know what you're getting on eBay _________________ Wash your hands
