bought this buggy about a year ago and still cant figure out what it is. Found some that look like it but not quite the same. Was on a 59 pan with a type 3 engine. Still looking up what year engine. No title and the pan is rusted out. Even the spine is weakend by the rust. Decided to rebuild this buggy and id like to figure out what it is. Cant find any emblems or id anywhere. Ill post pics when I figure out how.

Picked up a 74 bug with great pan and title. Dont know anything about vw and thought all bugs are the same. I was wrong. my 74 has a macphearson strut setup that wont work with my buggy body. Had to cut off front suspension and weld the 59 on. currently rewelding the floor pans on. Previous owner had them tacked on. Then I need to shorten pan 14 1/2 inches. Going to herculiner the pan. Got any tips? Suggestions?

Anybody hear of any problems putting an old buggy on a newer style pan? And how do I insert pictures from my phone?

you might of saved some work by using the front end and spine to the shortening cut from the old pan,and just the back of the new pan .The new pan will work just fine other than possibly a clearance issue with the battery and spare tire well,if they are behind the front seats .

ya, I thought long and hard about that. Im glad I used as less of the old pan as I could cause when I cut into it I could see how much of the metal had rusted away. It was pretty thin. It had been without cover for at least ten years in this rainy washington weather. Things rust fast. So Ive got some reinforcing to do.

Drop me a PM when you get farther along. I am down the road in Seattle and have a fair amount of parts for my buggy that I didnt use in my build for various reasons. Unless I sell them this year at one of the local meets, I'll probably still have em.

finally figured out how to post pics. more to come soon. finally done welding. still trying to figure out what it is. shortend it 14 1/4 inches and had to use the 59 front end and welded it to the 74. test fit the body and the battery box and spare tire wells hit the rear suspension. little fiberglass work will fix that. currently cleaning the pan for paint and herculiner. next weekend is brakes and start putting it back together.

It looks to be a pretty close clone of a Manx. That cover over the engine would have been a previous owners idea of customizing and wouldn't have been original. The screen and frame are definitely custom jobs too.

Its pretty close to a Manx. Few differences. I think the engine is custom because the fiberglass is pretty thin and done pretty crappy. Don't know what I'm going to do about the side pods. Think I might cut them off. Any suggestions? Ill post more pics of the body soon.

Been trying to find out if my type 3 engine which was bolted to an old swing transaxle will work with the IRS transaxle that wad on my 74 pan. I've read a bunch of forums and searched the internet but I'm still not getting the info I need. How can I tell if my trannys are 6 volt or 12. I've been reading that they are different. I don't know why voltage would have anything to do with a transaxle mating to a clutch and flywheel. Anyways I'm lost and need help. I'd hate to put money and time cleaning and fixing up a transaxle I can't use. Oh, and how can I tell if my engine is 6 or 12 volt? It seems to start fine with a 12 volt battery. Any info would be much appreciated. Ill post current pics of my build soon. I've got the pan herculinerd and painted now I'm rebuilding the beam.

The IRS that is on the 74 pan is coded. AT 25 03 4. Guy told me it was a bus transaxle. How can I tell?

It doesn't have anything to do with the voltage, it has to do with the flywheel size (and number of teeth on the starter ring gear) which coincidentally went from 180mm to 200mm the same year they switched from 6 to 12 volt.

There are lots of threads on the many options for using 180mm flywheel in a later transmission.

You'll have no problem making that Type III motor work with your buggy. Besides, I think they look really cool in a buggy...

Lo Cash! That is a neat set up. I never seen that on a dune buggy! Also.. Not to hi Jack. John.. Do u have the shorten hand brakes cables? I just got a David Barrett chassis.

BTW.. Kelvin.. Keep on it. Doesn't matter what the name. Just build it as long u like the body style! IMO!

I know it fits in the fiberglass body. It came with it. How can I tell what flywheel I have. Big difference? The only info I found on my engine is that its a 1600 from 1970 and its duel relief. What does duel relief mean? Might sound like retarded questions to you guys, but I have very little knowledge on VW. Already learnef a ton from this site

AT trans is probably a superbeetle trans. a late bus trans is much larger.

The "AT" tranny is from August 1972 on Beetle/Super Beetle.

Your flywheel teeth will determine what starter (6V or 12V) is needed to match the engine. A 12V flywheel will have 130 teeth. A 6V flywheel will have 109 teeth.

The tranny in the picture on the rusty pan is not the original tranny to a '59 pan. It is a '59 pan due to not having the shimmy shock mount on the front and the longer swing torsion bars on the rear. The original tranny would be a split case tranny and is weak.

It is possible that the tranny in the old pan currently has been clearanced to accept a 12V flywheel. The tranny number you show , 70 72 803, is somewhere around a 62 or 63 which would have been 6V from the factory. If you look into the bellhousing area and see man made (not machine made) grinding marks near where the 4 engine bolt holes are and around the teeth area is, it most likely has been clearanced for a 12V flywheel.

If your engine has a flywheel with 130 teeth on it, it will fit and work fine in the IRS tranny.

Out of curiosity, is the engine a single port or a dual port?

Couldn't think of the VW name quick enough. It is actually a true name for a shock absorber applied to steering gear on cars/trucks. Just put a new one on my Dodge 3500 and that was how it was printed on the box. Maybe a US manufacture thing?
