Powder Coating should be fine. I don't think ceramic coating is needed and it's been my experience that when handled it becomes shiney. Mine were media cleaned then using self etching primer and single stage paint. I used POR 15 on the J tubes. Both the boxs and J tubes still look great after 3 years of driving.
It's also been my experience that powder coating weakens small bolts and springs. That could be a problem with some parts on the boxes. Ask about that in the paint forum.

you will wreck the powder or cermaic when welding the two back together but not a huge issue as it's inside.
the powder will probably burn off where the j tube conects to the engine other than that they will hold up and look great _________________ Cruiser pedals for sale (see my ad's)

please everyone be patient with me...am good at electrical but this new territory for me..

Lemonlib,
Here is the website.
http://www.por15.com/
They produce a lot of products. I used the manifold grey paint on my J tubes. If you use it just media clean or sand the tubes before painting. Do not put primer on. You can brush on the POR 15 feathering it so it's fairly smooth. When it dries it will be very smooth. Will not burn off easily. I put on 2 coats letting the first one dry for 24 hours.
My experience with weakened springs and small bolts may be due to the higher heat my powder coating guy uses. Ask this question first on the Body and Paint forum before you do it. you may be OK and not have to rattle can anything. The guys on Body and Paint forum will know the best route to go. |

I appreciate that the tinware looks different, but the heater box is essentially the same fitment though isn't it?
I offered a NOS item up to my to 36hp and it seemed to fit ok... |

Yes, that's correct.
it;s jut that I had a set of NOS ones that were the angled style as above and they fitted right up to the motor and 36hp exhaust no problem.
Was it just the design of the tinware that was different on the later ones as per above?
Just want the knowledge... |

I was sent those same 40 horse styleheater boxes by JohnsHenry with my new J-tubes,and they DID NOT fit.I ended up re-using my original square 36HP heater box pieces.
I powder coated the engine tin, however simply high temp painted the boxes/j-tubes.The problem was the heater boxes did not mate up to the lower cylinder shrouds, the outlets did not line up.
I tried it,they did not work for me.I have no idea how you will get those to fit 36HP.
See where the heater boxes mate to the tin? That is where the 40HP boxes did not line up with the J-tube installed and mated to the head.

I just noticed that Harris's picture shows completely different lower shrouds than mine! Are those 40 HP parts? |

Interesting....
I'm not trying to get mine to fit, I've since sold them.
However, they did fit, I had them on there. The only area that needed a slight mod was the lowest mounting tap where the box screws to the tang that protrudes to the bottom rear of the tubular outlet for hot air.
Maybe there are two types of later heater boxes, as if you look on the for sale section in the parts section through to '57 on here, there are loads of 36hp sets for sale that are slanted and not square.
Also, some of the slanted style ones have larger more oval shaped heating tube inlets at the bottom instead of the dead round style.
Maybe there are two types of slanted ones - a 36hp and a 40hp?
Look at the exhaust on the one in this threat, it comes out of the same hole that the air goes into, where on 36hp ones, the air enters a hole adjacent to it. |

Sorry, yes this is a stale air 40 hp box. Posted for the paint and powder coat question. Should have noted that in the post. |

ZAR Werks http://www.zarwerks.com/ used to have a good pictorial about old heater boxes, the differences and how to tell but the link is down.

Did anyone have the foresight to copy this info onto their hard drive and would like to share?
Hopefully the link will come back, it was very informative.

Not sure what happened to that page, I will get it back up tonight. The '58-'61 style boxes will fit the 36hp lower tin. There are numerous pictures of them in manuals that show this. I have run them on a couple 36hp engines myself. Getting the J tube positioned right in the box half can be tricky however.
Greasemonkey, I will send you a PM later and we'll work something out.... _________________ John Henry
