Anyone interested in meeting up for a PNW winter backroad bus get together? The Olympic National Forest has some great, off the beaten path, type roads. There are lots of opportunities for adventure with miles of fire and logging roads. Depending on the conditions these roads can be a mellow afternoon cruise or a white knuckle, sheet-ice experience. Rather then driving in circles I was thinking of setting a goal, Quilcene Wa. to Sequim Wa through the park for example. This route would take us over 2 passes, including Bon Jon which should prove to be technically challenging.
There's no shortage of free camping up in the Olympics if people are interested in spending the night up there somewhere and driving to the top of Hurricane Ridge on day 2. I was just up there and it's a great place to spend an afternoon, tons of snow, a large heated lodge, back country ski/snowboard/sled/snowshoe terrain ect.
I was thinking the weekend of January 15th-16th might be good, that Monday (17th) is a Holiday for lots of people.
If people are interested I will post links to NPS topos ect.

Thanks for giving me a head up about this yesterday, Aaron. I'd be going for sure if I was still in Oregon. It's awesome that you're organizing a trip like this, I hope we'll see a bunch more expeditions of this type pop up around the country, soon.
For those of you in the Northwest that don't know him, Aaron's a great guy with lots of experience exploring the Washington peninsula in a split, any trip he organizes is sure to be one to remember. _________________ SST X, XI, XII

I don't have a running splitty right now, or I would consider the drive over. Maybe next time.
So the thread title says February, but the text says January. Which is it? _________________ nothing |

That's the beauty of this, just like the Love Boat it's "exciting and new". What do you think Greg, mid morning, crack of 10am? Unlike the other winter bus outing that shall remain nameless, this is in my backyard, I'm perfectly happy to adjust the start time to whatever works best for those traveling from further away.
I can offer yard camping Friday night for anyone that needs it.
In terms of where, Loggers Landing, it's a greasy spoon on the South end of town (East side of hwy 101). |

I was just checking to see if you were paying attention, ok you're hired. January 15th, thanks.
There's gotta be a "runner" in the East Side mix that you guys/gals could all pile in and bomb out here in.

Thanks Adam, it would have been cool if you could've made it.

You've got time to make it happen, what does your bus need to get on the road? Let me know if I can help.

I'll dig that early bus rim out for you. You can pick it up while you're up here.

Let me know if I should have the velvet green '65 roadrunner camper roadworthy for you before then. I drove it to the gas station and back for the first time today, and having it ready for a 2-400 mile roadtrip in a week and a half should be no problem. |

Sure, that sounds great. Should we meet for breakfast at 10am or should we plan to be fed and ready to depart at 10am?
We'll probably either drive up that morning or camp South of there Friday night. |

Gee, maybe next year after I trade my DC for a camper. One with a gas heater! These old bones still yearn for the desert heat and don't like the cold. _________________ the other Joe |

I think if we're planning on camping Saturday night then we can take our time. Meet at 10am, eat breakfast, look at maps, ect. That will also give anyone running late time to get there.
Here's a link to the NFS site for the area. Their site has maps of the roads within the Forest boundary, the fragmented format makes them not so fun to look at.

The Olympic Peninsula Recreation Guide Map (#1806) is a more user friendly map to use. The Quilcene ranger station will have them for sale. |

I don't have a lifted bus (or a split for that matter) but this sounds like a sh*tload of fun. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |
