My 77 Westy wasn't quite that bad but unless you are amazing with mechanics and bodywork its going to cost a ton to restore.
Parts have gotten a lot more expensive and hard to find recently...pay more upfront for a better example and you'll be ahead of the game.
10 grand is a good ballpark to restore a decent bus and double that if its in sad shape as metal work is expensive even if you do a lot of it yourself.

I must say, the VW's around OKC were looking pretty good! But not nearly as nice as the one in seattle! I like the red one from OKC but the absence of a headliner disturbs me... Is that expensive?

I don't know of anyone who sells them, but you could make one pretty cheap if you wanted.

Wow, that's very helpful! I might be able to swing by at look at one of these this weekend. I really appreciate the links! And I'm very jealous of the prices on the coast...
I know for sure that I don't want a full pop top camper..(westfalia?) I really want all the seats to be present. The cabinets and stuff aren't for me haha. Can somebody explain the differences between all the names? Westfalia, samba, kombi, etc?

There really isn't much to those headliners. But the red bus in OKC is a Westy. In a transporter the headliner is the same front to rear and there is replacement liners available for those.
Yea, we are kind of spoiled out here with the bus selections.
Westfalia was the company that retrofitted the buses to campers. VW sold them as campmobiles but no one calles them that. Not all campers are Westfalia. The other most common one in the US was the Riviera by ASI. The pop top went strait up and the layout inside was a bit different. There are a ton of other camper modifications so when you say Westy you should only be refering to the ones done by Westfalia.
And for the other questions from Wiki
Kombi, from German: Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), with side windows and removable rear seats, both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.
Samba-Bus, a van with skylight windows and cloth sunroof, first generation only, also known as a Deluxe Microbus. They were marketed for touring the Alps

have you actually replaced one? if it is so easy, then why does an upholstery shop charge 1000 to put one in? i did my own and it was very hard- easily the trickiest part of the restoration.

unless you meant that it is only a piece of vinyl...

Oh no no no.....I was refering to a Westfalia head liner above the driver. I wouldn't tackle a Kombi headliner.

Kudos to Dan for tackling his headliner a while back in his bus. I watched them put mine in. It is a very hard job to get it right. I have read Westy liners are easier.

Looks like a prime parts bus. Better off not to start with a body that's already been creamed.

It has been a while since I updated, been waiting for finances to come through! And today they have Cool
SO! I have to call him, and arrange for the transportation of the transporter. I'm pleased to see some inquiries, and I'll be uploading many many photos (and probably asking a few questions). I've learned how to use The Samba over the past few months so I'll be searching as often as possible to avoid causing unnecessary facepalms haha.
I also wanted to ad that we settled on a different price, and if you want to complain about me paying any amount for a bus this wrecked you can keep it to yourself. To me, it's worth what I paid. I'm going to love it and care for it for as long as I possibly can. Isn't that what every lonely bay wants? Plus if it gets dinged in the parking lot I won't have an anuerism lol
Stay tuned everyone, I might just go get it tonight Very Happy

I visited Dead End today. After a few hours I heard the bus running for the first time! They had pulled the injectors to clean them, and replace some of the crappy old rubber lines (bonus!). After the parts were replaced it sounded really strong, but it was burning the old nasty 2 year old gasoline....stinky Shocked So it'll drive now but I won't trust it without replacing ALL of those crapped out old hoses. He's trailering it to my house Monday evening! Here's a facial for you porn lovers out there.

haha yes it is, early bay but I don't know the year. It has rust running down from the headlights that looks like tears. I'm pretty sure it's a parts bus, there are many things missing from it. He has a lot of cool stuff out there

That's all that matters.

Good to see you were able to get the bus and it sounds like you're in love already. That's a good thing.

I got 5 RA O8's from Discount Tire. I had to order them and they came up from California. I think with disposal of old tires, mounting, balancing and the extended warranty I paid about 7 hundred. Yep that's a lot of money and if I had the ability to mount and balance the tires myself and dispose of the old tires I could have saved a lot of money, but I couldn't so I paid the price.

Keep up with the pictures. It will be nice to see that beauty cleaned up and you enjoying her.

Thanks guys, Busdepot.com-bookmarked.

@Zelten, Thank you! I'm glad you checked back in after so long. It was a long process of locking up ALL my extra money, resulting in being poor and miserable for a couple of months. It's so worth it now though.

I want to do a pretty massive clean-up, and as much mechanical restoration as I can, along with a ton of pictures.
Don't you just love restoration threads with tons of pictures? Twisted Evil

Found out yesterday that pretty much the entire driver's rear corner is bondo'd...and not too expertly. And that tail-light lens is much more yellowed than the passenger's side. If only buses could talk, right? Laughing

Don't forget http://www.germansupply.com/home/customer/home.php for your FI fuel and Vacuum hose replacements.

Oh yea, I kept looking in to see what you decided to do. I bet after a thorough cleaning that bus will look 100% better. It looks like you're going to need a new windshield rubber. In that full frontal porn shot you can see the lower edge is pulling back a good bit.
