Wow, I'm sorry Stuart, but I'm having trouble putting your string of words into a coherent statement Laughing

How tight should the wiper arms be on the body?

Just tight enough to squash the seal slightly. You do not want to over tighten them and squeeze the seal out.

I've been having trouble getting the headlight switch out.

Try soaking it for a few day with rust penetrant.
A small hole saw will cut the nut off.

Good luck

Thanks T. I'll probably back the nuts off a turn or two.

I reassembled the dash last night.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I also started pulling the headliner out. With the ever-so-slight windshield leak saturating the unfurled corners where the visors mount, the rust and white colored powdery drip marks all over my dash just weren't happening anymore. F that in the A. I don't care if it looks like shit for a while. I'll probably put some sound deadener down and do a tin top westy style ceiling later on.

I'm beginning to think that maybe I shouldn't have reassembled it completely...if something doesn't work it's gonna mostly have to come back apart.

Confession: I took a dremel to the escutcheon I buggered on the headlight switch. I fucked up. I sliced my dash Crying or Very sad That bastard had to die, though. It wouldn't come off with penetrating oil, the tool specially made for it wouldn't work, hammering the son of a bitch wouldn't work, it wouldn't twist or turn to loosen. So I went commando and I paid for it. Yesterday was a particularly bad day of working on the bus. Hopefully today is better.

What's coming tonight (other than your mom):
"If it doesn't rain today, maybe I can take the interior out to remove the headliner."

"Where THE F*CK are the windshield wiper nuts I acquired?"

I don't know how bad your cut is, but I used one of those Permatex Vinyl and Leather repair kits to fix the hole I made in my dash pad while trying to fix the mounting stud.

It is very hard to tell unless you're looking for it. I don't think anyone but me would ever notice it.

Now that I guess I'm done with wiring up front (for now) [until something ELSE pops up and doesn't work anymore], it's time to finally peek behind my firewall.

I want 0 gas vapors in the bus. F that in the A.

it's like that on both straps

Well, the B.S. straps are still donezo. I shoulda had Stu use his neanderthal-ish strength to help me loosen those bolts, he's gotta a thicker skin than I do Laughing So I PB'laster'd them and I'm gonna see how they're doing this weekend. Here's the tank today:

Right-o!

I popped off my pie plate ECU cover thing for the very. first. time. ever. and found that some bozo scrawled something on my ECU at some point! Never in my bus'ses's'es history have I ever had any real clues about its past or anything, save for a library card I found in the glove box. I don't know how to remove the ECU, so I left it for now, will attempt to remove along with the tank, at least to get a picture of it. Razz

Also, many of you have seen your Previous Owner's cut handy and grotesque fuel sender access doors. But how many of you have been graciously gifted with FUEL FILLER NECK DOORS?!

SWEET!^^ It does not really help AT ALL!

Here's the condition of my filler neck on the outside.

Upon taking a closer look, someone has repaired this, maybe more than once, with RTV. It will have to go.

And, I though this was funny, I went to remove the battery ground, and wound up with a perfectly misaligned bolt (plus bonus dremel battle scar!)

This was only a prep-day, lots of spiders, and dog pee on the tires is starting to stink in the humid Oklahoma summer.

The ECU is two 10mm screws top and bottom where the plug is and then yank hard, as its clipped in snugly. Tipping it top or bottom gets it out of the clip sometimes too.

Oh thanks bud! I kinda started to feel like a homeless person muttering to myself, so I decided to be less of a talker, more of a do-er.

1. I moved. Took a while to get settled.
2. Stuart AND Robbie (of Bay Forum fame) visited me this year [at different times]
3. My engine rebuild is probably halfway done.
4. Preparation for roof insulation, followed by some slightly custom wiring is happening now.

Following Wilson, I checked, cleaned, and lubed my oil pump, and installed it. I also properly torqued the case fasteners all the way around, and installed piston rings on the all pistons. Lost my piston ring compression tool in a move somewhere, so I stopped there for the day. The only pics from that day:

PostPosted: Wed Jul 19, 2017 7:42 am    Post subject: More on endplay Reply with quote

The pistons are in the cylinders. Before putting them on, we tried to set the endplay. Installed the shims I removed when we busted it apart, I got the flywheel locking tool on, torqued the bolts to 80 ft. lbs. The dial indicator showed our motion from 0 to about 12 thousandths if we pried the flywheel away from the case. Then it would spring back to about 3...not staying where we budged it to, and not returning to zero either.

Reading the red Wilson book, I knew I needed a different assortment of shims. Fortunately, my friend Adam recently picked up a huge stack of them during a wild VW parts uncovering in Kansas a while back. UNFORTUNATELY, NONE were small enough to give me endplay within spec.

So, we called it a day and scheduled an appointment with Mike, a semi-retired professional ACVW mechanic who served our area for about 30 years at reputable shops. Good friend of my friend. (Connections, people)

His garage is AIR CONDITIONED. So that was nice. After mic'ing a bunch of type 4 shims, practically every single one, we realized that none of us had any shims that would be the right size.

This led me down the rabbit hole, something I refer to as a

TYPE 4 UNOBTAINIUM RUN

Where one has to run around trying to find those weird little type 4 parts.

Not a coincidence that the 4 on a keyboard is also the $ key.

A phone call to RennSport Tulsa led me to the right shims (hopefully). It'll be 5 days and they're a whopping $12 each. So that's neat.

Once this is addressed and my endplay is within spec, its just installing P+C's, heads, then we're really gonna be soaring.

Soon, my long-lost tribe of weirdos. Soon.
