I have This early bay and I’m in the process of making a “to buy” list.
The brake drums are sort of expensive, so I thought I would have a machine shop turn them over. But I can’t find any minimum specs anywhere. I found a little info at ratwell but not sure if it’s for an early.

Any input would be appreciated.

Can you be more specific about "early"?, that covers a few models.

Don't turn em! If you ruin the ones you have then its off hunting OG or making do with Brazilian ones. Brake the glaze with sand paper.

I’m working on a 1968 with new drums from Wolfsburg West. About $300 for the pair

Are these the "Chinesium" ones or what is the source?

My front drums were worn past the limit. Locally, I could get some NOS German ones at $250/ea or the Chinese ones found on many of the web suppliers at about $100/ea.

Ended up using a set of used (within spec) I found at at Avery's for $100 for the pair with VW Markings.

They are front drums from Germany they say. $165 each. You can look them up.

An option for drums that are at the limit is to have extra thick linings installed on your core shoes. I had this done at Pueblo Brake and Clutch, they found an "offroad" lining set and bonded them to my cores for like $55. Worked great

my experience is that as drums get thinner they heat up and fade faster. The best braking is new arced linings combined with new drums. Few places, if any, arc shoes so I did mine with sand paper.

It is mentioned in the Vanagon Bentley for use between 253 and 253.5mm. It is mentioned in the Beetle Bentley as well, IIRC.

Thanks for the update. Definitely better than the $250 each I was quoted for a pair from a local source.

If you are in mountains or hills, you would test a setup like this with 10 repeated hard stops and evaluate fade

If you are Flatworld like most of America this would work fine. Fresh brake fluid every 2 years, using DOT 4 in either case.
