I saw a picture of a doka with cut outs in the rear gate to allow the brakelights to be seen with the gate lowered. I can't seem to find it again.
Was I dreaming?
cheers

The baywindow DoKas and Single cabs have the holes punched in the gates so that you can see the signals when the rear gate is down.

Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for. I had no idea that all the military ones had them. In the pic of the OD machine, it looks as though they have plexi or something over the cutouts too. _________________ Ongoing restoration/maintenance of my syncro double cab (and soon Westy):

That's a friend of mine's truck. I can ask him for some close-ups of those covers/windows if you like. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

While cutouts WITHOUT covers seem to be more common, you can clearly see the covers on the DOKA here: http://autostadtwest.com/cars/035274/035274.html hope this heps; a DOKA really is unsafe to drive with the stock rear gate down (I never drive mine like that). Kim |

I prefer these tail gate cables that hold the gates. They work for both the rear or the sides.

Sorry for threadjacking, but I'd like to see not only a closeup of the cutouts, but also a closeup of the rear gate cable attachment.
I've been using a cable strap from the side gates around the bottom of the gate to keep it level like a tailgate, but would like a more permanent arrangement for driving with the gates down or level.
Thanks! _________________ 89 Tristar Syncro Doka - White

Me too please! It appears those brackets on the green Syncro are factory but I do not have those on my Doka. I would love to figure out how to have the tailgate down to accommodate my motorcycle straight in for transport.
How does your setup work Bill? Do you have a pic? |

My buddy said he would send me some close-up pictures of the cut-outs on the military truck. I'll post them just as soon as I get them. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

My former '69 doka had the factory rear gate holes as Spaeth mentioned but I'd recommend careful consideration prior to punching any holes into a rear vanagon doka gate - one person's fancy could be a future buyer's molestation.
The vanagon doka rear gate cable brackets seem to have been a hit/miss option on both regular and tristar dokas. My tristar doesn't have them but most seem to, while I've seen on both 2wd and syncro dokas before without any particular trend or pattern.
I use a slightly longer bolt on the rear side gate latches with washer/nut on inside to hold a chain that I usually cover with an old bicycle inner tube (some protection from water and keeps the chain from making noise banging on the side gate plus protects the paint).
The other end of the chain has a hook that attaches to the tail gate latch receiver hole - the chain cut to fit in length to hold the tail gate horizontal.
The chains can be of varying strengths with one on each side depending on how much supporting weight one needs to have on the horizontal tail gate.
This is all a very inexpensive way to get around installing the brackets. |

So what is actually seen through it brake lights only, running lights or turn signal? It would take 2 huge holes to get all of the lights to shine through that are neded to drive legally on the roads.
Buy a NATO canopy and never have to deal with a tailgate ever |

Anyone got a close up of the actual cables and how they secure to the pins?
