Interesting I have a 71 and have used a 009 for 12 years and it's not listed as working for a 71. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

Just because it fit doesn't mean it work well. _________________ Glenn

Different total advance, different curves. There's vacuum only, mechanical only, vacuum/mechanical, single vacuum, dual with advance and retard. _________________ Glenn

So...then it would be interesting to see a cross reference of what will work in what bus years and what diff timing you need to compensate for the diff in dizzys? Or maybe some cannot be swapped at all? I ask this because I have a few I keep as spares are diff models and just purchased a use one on samba pulled from a 1.8 with a petronix. |

A 71 originally had a 1600 Type 1 engine. Personally i'd want a vacuum advance distributor in a heavy Bus to give it a bit more advance when it's under load.
Good is a relative term if you have no reference. There is better.
While this is a totally different vehicle, it's from someone who thought his vehicle "werks real good", until he tried something better.

I bought a rebuilt BR9 distributor from you 2 weeks ago for my 57 Speedster to replace the VW transporter distributor that it has had for over 20 years. I wouldn't have changed distributors if it weren't for the oil leakage problem I was having. I felt my car ran great. It idled well, seemed smooth at high speed and had no bad characteristics. That is until I put in your distributor. Apparently what I thought was great wasn't even good. First of all my car runs 30 degrees cooler at high speeds. It revs faster, it runs faster. It runs significantly better in every way. And this is in a car that by consensus was considered a great running car. If I was told there would be this much difference I would not in any way believe it. Not considering how well the car ran before.

I had a SVDA on their before and it ran okay for 3 years. I'm happy with my 009 but I wonder if it decreases fuel economy. I'm not married to it and have to use it or anything. 95% of the time it's just me in the Bus with nothing but the seats seems to do fine. Maybe the dual carbs and 1776 are why? _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

I'll put my bus with baby Webers and an 009 up against other setups for the gas mileage. I'd tell what my trip mileage is again but SG would need his meds. Right Steve? _________________ 71 Superbug

Getting away from original question. So unusual!
Is there a cross ref. what dizzys will work in what engines/years with or without modifications? |

No, because each one is curved for a specific combination of engine, gearing and vehicle weight they don't interchange. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Well then, could you tell a noob how to determine what dizzy you have and what dizzy you SHOULD have?
I ask because I want to buy points and a rotor this week, but my engine, I think, is far from original. When a local mechanic opened the engine hatch he shook his head and said "another hodge-podge pos..." I'm not sure the pos is accurate but it was to that effect. POS is what I think about it |
