PostPosted: Thu Nov 04, 2010 3:29 pm    Post subject: auto Trans help Reply with quote

just a quick couple question here:
if ATF fluid is in my differential, is that a final seal?
what seals to replace if I drop trans to do this?
is there a kit?
I am sorry, I know many will say do a search, but I have been looking for 2 hours, and now need to go to work. I am new, and am unsure of what to type for search, so there ya go.
any help will be appreciated.
I have the bentley, and have done a lot of stuff mechanically, so I am sure I can do it-It will probalbly take me a long time though, but I have more time than money
it is an 87 auto trans, if that helps.

Ok thank you, will check back when I get off work at midnight

Jason

There is a kit you can get from online vendors or as I did from VW. I can (not right now) get you the part number of the kit.

Someone else will like ly beat me to it though.

Brian.

You can likely get all the parts you need from Halsey Automotive in Portland.

The kit has all the gaskets for both trans and final drive. The other one you want is rear/front main seal for the engine. The reason I call it a rear/front seal is another thread altogether.

Part # 010-398-007-B

I got off my butt and went and looked in the basement. Very Happy

Thank you for your help. I have not been around, because my daily driver for work went down too! ugh- and I needed to get that fixed, and have been cramming all the kids in the jeep Cherokee. I am about to call Halsey, so thanks for the info on that.

I will let you all know how it all turns out.

on a side note, in case this is beyond my capabilities, Is there anyone out there that is able to help out, or knows a place that can do the transmission at a fair price?

thanks again for helping out.

Jason

If you're buying the plane ticket I'll be right over! Unless it's Portland, Maine.

I could drive there.

I talked to Rob at Halsey PArts, and he has ordered the kit for for, and it will be here Tuesday at 9am! I am going to try and remove the Transmission this weekend, and have it all prepared. I left a message for a guy named Tom, in there service dept too, and left my number for him to get back to me about bringing my transmission in to get the job donee in case it seems too much for me. For some reason, I am really freaking about this, I do not really understand the Bentley, and what it is saying, so I am leaving myself an out.

Of course they are closed on the weekends Smile Does anyone have an idea what the cost of bringing just my transmission in to get the seals done might cost? I have seen other posts where people are pretty knowledgeable on what someone might expect to pay in labor and how long the job might take.

I am excited and nervous about removing the tranny, but I figure anything that breaks can be fixed...I am hoping anyway. I'm looking forward to having some garage time this weekend.

Thanks again for the support I have gotten, this has been quite an adventure.

since I am going to the parts store on tuesday, is there anything else I should be getting that I am most like not aware of regarding my tansmission? besides the rear/front seal mentioned by bjrogers86auto.

have a good weekend,
Jason

How did this go. I am looking to do this project myself.

Anyone else install the seals from a "seal kit".

I have two trannies sitting on the floor of my shop waiting for some love.

uh...that didn't sound quite right...oh well.

Curious about anyone's experience with this.

Once the trans is out and drained, the reseal job is easy.Powerwash the trans to get all the road hash off first. The diff separats from the ATF section with just a large O-ring acting as the gasked. I would reseal this area with a small amount of sealent and than torque the Four mounting nuts down to the required value. The actual diff seals should be fitted with a seal installer as they are a one shot deal. TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T RUSH. Use a torque wrench when you re-install the diff cover and anything on the trans.
