Okay will verify as it may have a typo on the registration here. Did they have drums or discs for the 1302? |

The model year confusion often comes about because VW used a different "year" to the calendars the registration folks use.
The 70 model year was from 1 Aug 69 to 30 July 1970, so if it was sold and registered in 69 the rego folks would call it a 69, but if it was made late in the model year and first registered in early 71 then they will call it a 71, when in fact both are wrong - it's still a 70 model.
Go by the chassis number - from 65 onwards the third digit is the model year, so a 70 is 110,xxxx,xxx with the "0" meaning 1970.
70 models did not have superbugs. 71 was the first model year (chassis 111,xxxx,xxx) for superbugs and they started building on 1 August 1970.
In the USA, all bugs came with drum brakes, but only ever got the biggest engine offered in that year. Other countries got several engines offered in each model year.
In most other countries, the 1500s from 68 to 70 had disc brakes and the 1300s had drums. From 71 onwards, the superbugs had the 1600 engine and disc brakes, the standard bugs had 1300 engines and drums brakes. There are probably some exceptions to that general rule though.
Through all this the 1200 was offered as a base model in most European countries and stayed 6v well into the 70s. The last German built bugs in 1986 were all 1200s. _________________ Rob
