Sorry, but 67 bug door handles are one year only. You'll need some good welding and bodywork skills to fit any other year handles. |

Ok does anyone have a set with keys? Or can I have them rekeyed to fit my ignition key? I remember when I had type 3s I was able to get the door handles keyed to match my ignition. |

I'm always looking for 66 handles, and see a lot more 67's in the classifieds. $20-25 with keys is about average. What you need to do is find out what key profile your ignition switch is, then look for handles that have the same profile. With that, you can have them easily keyed alike. _________________ -Bruce

If you remove the door handle it has key code on it, your ignition also should have it as well, you can that code to a locksmith and have keys made, or Gabe here on thesamba can rekey all your to match. |

Only if it has the "k" code ignition switch. |

so if 67 has 2 screws holding handle to door, why would some one say "67 and newer fit" if in fact 1968 has only 1 screw????
1966 has a longer casting that goes further into door than 1967 so only 1967 handles fit a 1967 beetle.
too many guessers and few knowledgable answers here. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

Pretty sure I pointed that out yesterday, Bill. Gonna have to pick up the pace if you want to keep up. We're onto re-keying the original locks now.

Late '66 handles look just like the '67 ones but if i remember correctly there is a difference between the two so they still won't work correct? _________________ '70 ghia

Correct, they won't work. Here is my pic of several door handles for my 66. A is a 67 handle that was modified to work on a 66, B is similar but has broken button. It was done using the lock pawl from a 66 handle. C is a std handle with no lock so there's no pawl, D, and E are pure 66. The rectangular uprights on 67 handles are shorter because the pawl faces forwards towards the front of the car for the different latch. 66 lock pawls face rearward and the upright is taller, so they won't even fit deep enough in a 67 to start the screws.
I will say late 66 handles are harder to find, they were less than 1/2 year, at least 67 was a full model year. I saw four 67 handles at Pomona last weekend and only one 66 handle. _________________ -Bruce

I agree the late '66 handles are more difficult to find. I did get lucky and picked up a set of pretty dang nice ones off a junkyard car for really cheap. _________________ '70 ghia

Is the stainless part of the handle the same between 66 and 67? I can't see any difference between the two that I have here.
Thanks,

Yes if you look at both handles from the front they look pretty much identical. Its the guts of them thats different _________________ '70 ghia

One thing you have to look for if you're swapping guts is there are two vendors, Huf and AKS. They have different castings and the parts are not interchangeable. Otherwise, the exterior of the handles are the same. _________________ -Bruce

So where on a 67 exactly is this magic screw to remove the handle? Mine has 2 lower and 1 upper /inner that hold the strike plate, but seemingly not the door handle. |

I agree. I’m looking for an AKS handle as we speak if you know anyone that has one in good shape for sale!!
I prefer the AKS handles because they have the square slider instead of no slider at all.
I have (3) ‘67 handles here if anyone wants to trade or needs one of mine. |
