anyone got any tricks? mine seems quite stuck.
the picture in my bently presumably shows some custom VW tool, but i can't even tell because it's so underexposed all i see is black.
it seems like the only way to get leverage here is to use the edge of the hub surface on the brake disc, but since the wheel sits against this, i'm afraid of deforming it.
is there some tool i don't know about that combines a pulley remover and a slide hammer? something that could grab the little lip on the dust cover and pull on it evenly? |

Something like this perhaps?
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&t...ir=catalog
I've always been able to get them off with large channel-locks, and applying rocking force up and down.
EDIT: Saw Alaric's video, yes just like that! _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Large channel locks, a big pinch bar, even a claw hammer will all work. |

damn that thing was stuck. even my 3 foot pry bar was doing a better job tipping the van on the jack than loosening it up. but the hammer did the trick!
thanks for all the advice!

On our Westy the left dust cap is attached to the speedometer cable. You must pop off the e-clip before pulling the cap. _________________ 1981 Westy Automatic

Hello from the future……
The claw hammer wasn’t able to get a good enough purchase on the lip of the bearing cap. It keep slipping. Since it is a no, no, to hammer two hammers together, I used my crow bar and a hammer. Worked perfectly!

I use a flat bar. Ground a radius to go around the cap, then belt sanded it so it's sharp and slips into the gap better. |

This is close to what I use as well. Mine is what's called a Rolling Head Pry Bar, and has other names as well. The curved head of the pry bar locks pretty well behind the lip of the Dust Cap, against the Rotor/hub.
Here are some examples.
