It normally gets a little warm in operation, but not very hot.

In a 68 bug, you have the black wire from the harness connected to the + side of the coil (black in VW-speak means "live with the ignition on"), and another wire (or wires) go to the choke element and the solenoid in the side of the carb. If your car has reversing lights (Aussie/Euro cars didn't get them til 72), you'll also have a wire from the + side to a fuse holder near the coil, and from there it goes to the switch on the tranny nose and on to the reversing lights (so the reversing lights only work with the ignition on). That's it for the + side.

The other side of the coil has the (usually green) wire coming up from the distributor.
