Posted: Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:48 pm Post subject: Where to buy Brake Backing Plates or adjuster retainers? |
|
|
Started rebuilding my brakes and had to stop because the retainers for the star adjusters were missing from both front backing plates. They are riveted so I thought I would just go online and find them. Searched for well over an hour and could not find them or the brake baking plates. I looked on all the usual sites: CIP, WW, EIS, even BFY ( not that I would deal with BFY again ) with no success; I even searched here and nothing. It seems these sites only sell backing plates for beetles, later buses or disk brake conversions. Does anyone know where I can buy what I need? Thanks |

I had one broken off on the front of my '63 and I had to get a used one from another web site member.
I have seen splitpile post that he has used pieces cut off a metal springy rake before. |
Thanks for the info, went to his site with no results found. Why is it that we have to buy these used, it's a common brake component.

I recall a recent thread where splitpile and campingbox wrote about making those springs easily with readily available materials. The metal rake was one of them. I suck at searching, but with diligence I am sure the thread could be found. I have never run into this problem (lucky, I guess) but it seems to me they should be simple to make. _________________ nothing |

Metal rake material is good and so is metal from steel bandings from shipping boxes. |

x2 on the steel banding material.
I went to Home Depot and found long pieces of steel banding on the floor in the lumber aisle. I broke off a small piece and took it home. About half an hour of hacksawing, filing, and hammering later I had a reasonable copy of the brake star spring. I pop-riveted it on to the backing plate and was good to go.
It WOULD be easier if someone would just sell the things though. _________________ '64 standard microbus

Iv'e never done this but I do know banding material vs spring rake very well. I would use the rake vs the band, the band stuff would work but it is not made of very springlike material compared to the rake. Learnt all that making shivs in the pen. _________________ 63 15 window deluxe Turkis walk through 1500

There are a ton of ways to skin a cat but what I do now is steal the bits from Baywindow backing plates. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Trying to use the rake pieces to fab a star retainer clip. The rake pieces keep snapping. Taking a break but I am starting to get desperate as I need to drive to work day after tomorrow. Any suggestions, what tools did u guys use to get the correct radius, would heating the piece help.
Really wish someone would repop these.
Thanks

There was a thread on here that somebody used steel banding as a suitable replacement. Ive never tried it yet but I have collected a few strips of it. Not sure if it would retain the springyness after its bent into shape. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

Have some NOS barndoor ones:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=559959
They are different than the later 55-63 bus version, or the 1 ton version.
These are the same as used on the back of some early beetles:
I wish I had found bags of the later ones. |

Thanks Clara. Unfortunately I have a 66. I finished the front brakes with the help of some heat. It's not pretty tho. Would love to find a couple used ones for the rear. |

Bringing this back to life because it seems I have the same problem and hoping there might be newish answers. And because I don't fully understand how the rake is formed into the holder.
To be specific, the adjustment holder is what I'm missing, three of them on the right side so that when I adjust the brakes they slowly go out of adjustment each time I press the brakes.
Also, somehow, my brake pedal started pressing against the right side of the hole in the floor, but I haven't gotten under there to see why yet, so maybe I'll know the answer to that in a few hours.

EDIT: Some further google-fu and a few calls revealed that there is a new replacement part, you just have to special order it...apparently...
The OEM part number is this:
211-609-485/B
The reproduction part number is this:
J19481
So far, Bus Depot in the US and Just Kampers in the UK are the only ones I've found that sell them. Woo...I kind of answered my own question. Kinda. _________________ 1967 Camper
