Nice!
Show us the car when finished with the new top and rims.
May we know the chassis and motor number? _________________ 1962 type 117 (black beetle sunroof)

^ very nice indeed.
Ill be acquiring a BC for my 61 Convertible soon .. .. Even though its far from original now.. and will be far from original later.. it will be the last VW I rebuild ... so feel its worth it to have..
The 58-64 convertibles are the cream of the Beetle crop .. IMO ...

Wondering if anyone has documented wheel rim color and/or paint code for
a 1962 Convertible in L1009 Yukon Yellow.
Talking with different wheel paint authorities, Moss Green and Olive have been
mentioned. Does anyone have a reference as to what is correct?
The wheels on Mary Jane's car were spray bombed black over some shade of pea green color.
Got down through the black to find that all the pea green was sanded off the
outer rim flange down to the wheel center seam, before they got spray bombed black, so the previoous intention to use them in original paint is not possible.
Hoping to get the right color identified and paint the wheels, as the Cabbie is
otherwise a finished driver. |

I believe all convertible wheels had black rims since they came from factory with beauty rings, the color on the center disc would be an accent color. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

I cant answer your question to specifics.. but here a couple examples of higher end restorations .
I feel the first one is the most accurate.
These . while the disc is correct, the rim is a bit too brown most likely to match the brown top it had..and... no beauty rings.
IMO if 100% know your wheels are original to the car.. you have the best evidence at your disposal.

Your original rims are probably the correct colors. Black outer rim is correct on a convertible and the green center disc is most likely going to be the correct accent color. If all the date stamps are correct I would bet they are original. Karmann produced convertibles as well Karmann Ghias came factory equipped with beauty rings which is why the outer rims were painted black. No need to paint them in a color since they are mostly covered up. This is my '63 vert wheel in original paint, cadmium red /black on a poppy red car. Hope this helps.

A black outer rim should be correct.
Another difference I recently learned about is that vert wheels were masked differently than sedan wheels. The center color extended out onto the rim, and the mask line was under the trim ring so that the center color shows on the rim inside of the trim ring, and black only shows outside of the trim ring.
As seen on this original paint wheel.
While we're on the subject of Cadmium Red vert wheels, this is a really nice example I came across on Facebook.
Been doing my homework on wheel colors and paint variations since my '63 I posted earlier is going back to stock wheels and suspension. I may do a second set of 356 wheels with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Also bought a Judson supercharger for it.

I will confirm the paint line does split under the chrome rings, the original paint rim I showed above is the same way. Also, the ruby vert with cadmium rims above was also mine but has since been sold. My current one is poppy red. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

Great information gentlemen... Masking under the ring makes perfect ease of production sense especially since the Sedans of the era had full black wheels.
John.... I thought you sold that red 63?

Convertible wheel disc color for 1962 L 1009 Yukon Yellow?
Thank you BUGMANDAVE, THEASTRONAUT, AND VOLKSWAGENUT for the
confirmations of the correct, original color line of demarcation for Convertible wheeels. All is clear.
Who has dealership paint color binders, Berater, Parts Lists or best, KARMANN documentaion naming the Rim color?
Pics of the original color found on all four (spare MIA) 10/61 wheels:

Not yet, had an issue with the trans popping out of third, and the new rings gave up sealing at 2800ish miles so it had to come back apart. Still planning on letting it go once I finish it, probably on Bring A Trailer. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exist and make it better. Just been following this thread and I'm surprised to find about the colours of the rims, always assumed they were the same as the sedans black/white. I've got a Poppy Red 1964 convertible, so would my rims have been Cadmium Red centers? |

Sorry to say, after 63 they stopped with the accent colors and went black/ white on sedans and all black on convertibles. I believe they also used slotted chrome full wheel covers on the convertibles. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

Thanks bugmandave, slightly gutted that they changed that on the 64 model year. One thing that's puzzled me about my 64 is the headliner, it's cloth and as far as I'm aware they'd already switched to vinyl? |

It may have been optional, my 63 had cloth also but I've read that perforated vinyl was also used in 63. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

So I just purchased a 1962 convertible in yukon yellow vin 4620960 with the OG 40HP and still 6v. I've had other early bugs, but no convertibles. Trying to find out more about these and what all is different. The previous owner has had it since 1995. Previous to that, it looks like that owner purchased it in 1991, put in new pans and did a light refresh and outside respray. I there seems to be some type of square box rails on the underside with rust issues, but nothing else that I've found. Don't have pictures of that yet, but here are some of the car.

So apparently the coach Build# is 5338, built March 1962.

Two YY '62s on one page of this thread? A seldom-seen beautiful color.
Wagenbits- having slobbered on your car in person- it's great to see it here.
I have a theory regarding black outer rims. Since Karmann intentionally scratched every convertible rim on their cars (spares included), it makes good sense they sprayed black under there. Kind of a preemptive strike and apology combo. _________________
