Lost power around 10:30 last night. Have the generator running now so we've got SOME power. Absolutly everything downtown is out and it's a nightmare trying to find a gas station.
Maggie looks like she's staying put for a while:
It's so weird seeing the trees with full canopy and around 2' of snow on the ground

This d**n winter storm really sucks.
We have no power, no cable, no cell phones (towers down), no heat (it was 42 today and will be 20 tonight) and no water.
Both our bathroom tubs are filled with snow trying to get it to melt so we can have an occasional flush. Of course that makes the bathrooms cold as hell. We are boiliing snow (our gas stove works) to get clean water. Bottled water is scarce because everyone else is in the same situation.
My shower today consisted of going outside and getting a pan full of snow, boiling it, bringing it into my bathrrom where I added snow from the tub until it cooled and then pouring that over my head. All of this in a 50 degree bathroom.
No change until Friday morning is expected. |

And heard on the news today (with pics) that some places have cancelled Halloween until Thursday due to downed power lines. Thinking of you all. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I just got around to reading my online news and I see Nova Scotia and parts of New Brunswick got hit with a "freak" storm which has had much the same effects. I'm just not ready for it, maybe January would be okay _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Looks like it's going to be awhile before you folks on the North East are back to living normally. Things like these are what convinced me to install a wood stove (always have heat) and not to change to an on-demand water heater (always have 40 gallons of fresh water on hand). Gas cook stove is a plus, too.
Hope you all make it through OK. I'm much to far way to help with anything hands-on. _________________ nothing |

Power came back on yesterday at 11:00. 36.5 hours without power. Still not as bad as the '08 Ice Storm where we didn't have power for 6 days! We had a generator this time too so, it really wasnt THAT bad. Just more of an annoyance. Still don't have cable or internet but I REALLY don't care as long as I can take a hot shower and be warm without wearing 3 layers. Plus I have an iPhone so, no biggie. Theres still more then 350,000 people in Mass without power right now and almost every town moved Halloween to Thursday. People always wonder why I hate winter _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

I do agree with a wood stove appliance. Does not have to heat your whole house, it will keep the chill out and you can cook on it. Gas stove you can cook and heat water, gas hot water, hot showers to. I like some of you are in Rural areas. This happened here several years ago went 44 hours no electricity but we were comfortable. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

The only issue with living rural in a no-power situation is that you are likely on a well system for water, and you need electricity to run the well pump. Easily averted with a generator, but it is just another system to purchase and maintain.
No easy answers, for sure. _________________ nothing |

Heading into day 7 with no power, no water and no heat.
Cell phone service is back though.
Night time temps in the 20's. Water in the tubs is running out and I am draining the hot water heater.
They said we would get power back last night. Nope. Now they say tonight. I doubt it.
For a period of time they had 1 power crew on the ground working in a town of 57 square miles and 6500 homes....all of which were without power. They now apparently have 12 crews and have made some progress but 75% of the town is without power. School has been cancelled the whole week.
I am about to lose my patience.... |

Hang in there. I am sure those crews are working as hard as they can to get the job done. _________________ nothing |

Yeah...no doubt the crews are working their butts off. They have come from as far as Kentucky to help out. They are working 18 hour days. Whenever I see one I slow down, roll down the window, and say "Thank You".
Now if you want to get me going about the power company who had 1 crew on the ground on Wednesday........... |

We got power back after about 40 hours. IT was on for a few days and then went off for the entire day yesterday.
Turns out a huge pine tree just decided to go ahead and fall. Must have been weakened and hung in there well after the storm then fell taking a major feed line down in the process. Fortunately it blocked a Major State Highway and I believe injured someone as well (well, that part isn't good) for there were ambulances on the scene. It took the entire day but by 5:45 we had power restored by a crew from Atlantic City that is up here working on our lines.
Hope you have power soon! It's a real bummer in today's society to be without it!
Part of me wonders if we got power restored so quickly because we live in the same town as the Governor. You know, the famous Jersey political corruption! Only this time it may have actually helped me!!!
