Cool to see how someone else does it. But, after building flipped spindles for a couple of years, the way you are building them is dangerous. Not picking on you, I just don't want someone on here to hurt themselves or others. I'm glad you install gussets that is VERY important!!!. But you need to clearance the king pins some so you don't remove so much metal from the back side of the spindles. It weakens them and they could break driving down the road. Also, 1 out of 7 sets of spindles needs the king pin bushings replaced. That issue was not talked about. And last, I think you need to build a jig to reline the king pins, using link pins, if you miss that, you can't get the king pins removed after you press them together. Sorry , My 2 cents.
Be careful out there building your own flipped spindles, your $200.00 savings could cause you to lose your $20,000 bus. Good luck!!! Very Happy

Not disputing anything posted here at all, so please don't take this in a negative way.

I did a search through the gallery and the forums; anyone have stories or pics of a spindle broken due to the grinding done to it for flipping?
I have seend the grinding WITH gussets as shown above,

I have seen grinding/milling with no gussets like here:

And I have seen less grinding on the spindle and more grinding on the king pin in the area marked in RED in the right side image below

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

All accomplishing the same end result of a lowered suspension.
any failure stories?

I don't remember if this spindle came apart or broke. The rear left wheel came off and caused the back of the bus to lift putting all of the weight on the front right wheel.

I am on topic, you work for Nate in his shop so I am assuming those are wagenswest spindles. Sorry for putting it out there.

The spindle came apart, the kingpin came out from the force of the bus slamming down after loosing the back wheel. (those spindles where made by someone in lakeland Will said).

How did they get that thing on the trailer? Drag it up?

I think people always question non-stock parts, especially suspension
parts due to the load they carry. I hear the same concerns about welded spindles used on bay windows but I've never seen or heard of one failing. I think we all want to be safe out there so it's good to discuss the way these things are done.

either way, it's totally on topic. Lots of shit I'll do to my own bus but sometimes it's better left to someone who has done it a hundred times or more. You decide. Boo hoo!
after looking at the pics in that link, no offense but that shit scares the f out of me, my bad for growing up in my dads machine and welding shop... but whoa wtf. I seriously hope some homey with a harbor fright grinder and welder doesn't endanger his life. forgive me if that sounds harsh, I could be totally off base.

I don't think anything would have held up to want that bus with through.
