|
So, we leave Wedesday at near dawn for Nags Head, NC from Denver, CO.
I hope.
The hubby took the son out in the Westy for a first time go, but the sloppy shifting had him in 3rd instead of 1st a lot. They also did some slow speed parking lot maneuvering all in 1st gear :/ At one point, the son put the shifter right between 1-3 and it got stuck. they called me and i had them gently but firmly pull the shifter backward toward 4th and it popped out and shifted fine after. BUT, it seemed to have very little climbing power immediately after and they drove the mile home. I'm giving it cooiling time now.
It's going to Blazer for a pre-trip oil change and a belt change and pre-trip once over.
When my hubby came and told me they broke it, i think i did Academy nominated acting to keep calm and collected and went to look. i did smell what i thought was brake burning, but i didn't smell anything when i was under thr car. Hoping that it was just residual e-brake smell, maybe the boy was driving with the brake on. Hubby does that...not occasionally.
So, if I'm up and running Wednesday, we'll be taking I-70 to I-64. Anyone want to volunteer to be on my help list? Just in case? Wish us luck either way!

I do have a AAA card and an adventurous spirit.
But my 13 yo daughter does not. So, hoping for boring driving.

Do you have the Vanagon Rescue Squad app? _________________ -- Andrea

Nope, how do I get this awesome app?
Also, the clutch is fine. I'm sure my husband was just hyper sensitive and thought there was a problem when there wasn't. Safely delivered to the mech, he'll check it over...

You don't actually need the app, but if you have an iPhone, I'd check the app store--it's free. When installed, it can tell where you are and will show you everyone who's registered themselves within a certain radius.
You can also access that same information via the web site:

You're going to have a great and perfectly uneventful trip! _________________ -- Andrea

Sounds a little like your shifter forks are worn or broken. If so you should have only mature manual trans folks driving it to avoid breaking further. Long trips r a bad time for driver training on antique bits... _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

Yeah - uff da.
I'd say keep the boys out of the driver's seat, or at least stay up front with them if they are!
Hope you have a great trip! _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

got the shifter fixed yesterday, it's all good.
So, so far Westy is drinking oil like an alcoholic...
AND, i had to stop and get a ticket for the toll way and as soon as i started moving again, i knew something was wrong. zero power.
i made it off the next exit and am currently sitting at the Hrdee's at the truckstop just after the eastbound I70 toll plaza. praying that somehow something is just too hot.
i put the car in gear and it revs but with very little moving. Tom said this happened with he and the boy. it revs but barely moves.....
I'm trying not to cry in front of my family and freaking out my kids. Tom seems calm. i'm worried that I've ruined a vacation and what am i going to do.
AND what's wrong with it now????

Sorry to hear the trouble.
Let it cool and see what happens.
Is there any significant oil dripping from the engine or the engine/transmission mating area?
If its any consolation, I think that I can say for almost everyone here, we have all been in your situation at one time or another... keep smiling, things will work out |

Just checked and there is nothing leaking and the engine isn't wet underneath.
What's wrong, why is it doing this and will it happen again? do i just start for home and pray to arrive?
I have AAA but i don't see them towing me back to Denver if something is really bad. I'm just outside Topeka, so i can get it towed there for free. is this a new transmission? does the clutch help me to drive or just open the tranny to change gears?
I'm so sad. can anyone recommend a KC vw repair???
EDIT: called Brown VW in KC and he says it's a burned clutch. what should that cost to fix?
thanks all... |

A little late to this thread. We're in Richmond VA just a couple of miles north of I-64, if you get this far and find yourself needing more assistance. Good luck! _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

So, we are towed, delivered to Brown Auotmotive in KC and the driver e en delivered all of us to the Courtyard Marriot in KC.
When i mentioned that the car is drinking oil but not smoking, mechanic said it could be and probably is the rear main seal leaking oil into the clutch and that is whats making it slip. I was not using the clutch on the highway, going 60mph...so why the clutch would suddenly go bad, is the question.
i figure he'll separate the engine and teanny to find an oil covered clutch.
$700 is the estimate, prolly high since we're desparate, but maybe not.
cross your fingers and toes, we'll be spending tomorrow at the hotel pool.
Not a bad way to spend a day. The Cleve Indians aren't in KC right now, or I'd go see them.
what do you all think of that diagnosis?
thanks for the well wishes....
