I just got myself one of these little bikes and am totally jazzed about it! Less than 5' long, 175 lbs, 85MPG, the smallest street-legal dirt bike made AFAIK. It's a blast to ride around town and up and down trails. I think I am going into my second adolescence, childhood maybe not far off...

CT70 similarities to Vanagon: cult following, not made anymore, slow, fun as hell...Day after I bought it, my favorite question from a stranger: you wanna sell it? Happens once a month or so with the V.

Anyway my question is this. I want to mount the bike on the front of my Syncro, since the rear is taken by Gary Lee gas can and spare tire carriers. Whatever mounting system I use, it has to be easily detachable since if the bike top clears the headlights, it's going to compromise my approach angle in the front. It also has to be sturdy as hell to support 175lbs cantilevered out a couple of feet and sometimes doing 30 miles or more of washboard roads.

One guy has done this but I can't quite get the details from his website and the email doesn't go anywhere: http://home.earthlink.net/~johndolsen/id4.html. Gary Lee makes a front rack but for bicycles.

Anybody done this or something like it? Burley or Rocky Mountain, you there?

happy trails, I'm out of here!

I have a blue 71 CT 70. I put a Lifan 125 motor with a 4spd and a clutch in mine. It is awesome. Mine isn't street legal currently but I should get it done this spring. I agree, greatest bike ever for small and compact. Check out the ST 90. I have been tempted by those a few times too.

As far as a carrier goes. What do you have for a front bumper?

What I like about the CT70 though is that it fits between the headlights...

RMW, yes the 90's are nice but they don't fit on the front.

I just have a black steel front bumper.

I was thinking of getting some 3" square stock, welding it to the frame on both sides, then welding bucket-type wheel holders to smaller square stock that would fit inside the square stock mounted on the frame. The inserts would be pinned to the larger square stock for easy removal.

??

Looks like no one has actually done this except for the guy with the website, Mr Dolsen.

Totally open to ideas.

Most mounted motorcycles I have seen here are mounted on the rear.
I'd guess so that when you hit something, then you have a 2nd vehicle
but what if somthing hits you ?

also most I've seenhere on the vanagon forum are a larger rear dirtbike.
not so much a small campground grocery getter.
also the rear is easier to make adjustments to handle the added weight. (of larger bikes)

Everything seems to be rear.

Seems front is better to me for weight distribution. 200lbs on the front end might work wonders even in curing butt sag, who knows?

I can't mount on rear anyway as I have the spare & gas can there.

Some good pics of rear mounts though, maybe adaptable to front, we'll see. Hard to believe that the mysterious Mr Dolsen is the only one who's done this.

I too am looking to mount my son and daughters race'd out CRF50's on the bumper
After some thought, I'm just getting a trailer or making the kitchen modular
the bikes are built around the CRF50 subframe with full suspension so their small enough to fit in the galley as is[/img]

i've seen these pics of Lucas' rig (GoWesty) with a ct70 on the front. Sounds like what you're after. He'd likely talk you into new bumper though.

Those old small hondas are certainly awesome bikes, my first motor vehicle at 15 was a 1973 XL70, I could ollie over it off flat ground on my skateboard way back when, would be an awesome bike to have for quick trips to town and the like.

A westy loaded to be on the road for a few weeks is, in my experience, at or a bit over the max vehicle weight rating so throwing 200+ lbs of motorcycle and rack on the front of the van would put you over weight with the van loaded. Proper load rated tires would deal with it ok though.

The pics skivan posted show exactly why I'm doing this...very cool set up.

I'm running 15" Michelin LTX's, will check load rating on them but I think it's ok.

Here's a few:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2...mp;start=0

Do a search for motorcycle carriers. I think I remember a Samba member posting a picture of his Trail 70 on the front.

i hate trailering

i started with one of mikes bumpers, added a receiver and a harbor freight carrier (which would be over kill for a CT70) to carry the wifes klx140l, still untested at this point. plan is wifes 140 on the front, my ktm 450 rear, just need to find the time to try it now. i think headlight interference (i mounted soem more driving lights), less flow to radiator, and the bugs you'll collect are the drawbacks

oh yeah--the CT70, one of the best bikes ever made, i am actually partial to cubs/passports, but the ct70 is off-road capable

I bought a '74 CT 70 a few months back. Took it home inside the van(with all camping gear installed). Plan on carrying it there on trips, I sure there will be drawbacks.....will find out.

Yes, the CT70 will fit diagonally across the camper floor area, pretty easy lift in, I just don't want it back there.
