what transmission is this?

Can anybody tell me what type of tranny this is? I've always assumed it is stock but I never actually confirmed it.

That is just a single side cover trans.
1973 and newer.

yeah that's a 73'+ tranny. unless it has had IRS conversion AND a diff tranny placed in it's life then no it isnt 67. but somehow i think it's a bitsa. they are so easy to work on you never know how many miles they have really done when you buy them either. (parts from 3 diff cars, 5 diff speedo's etc lol)

this isnt the tranny in your big tuff baja is it?

It is a '68 or earlier pan in the picture. It was formerly a swing pan and now has a IRS conversion.

The tranny is a late '72 up to a mid year '74. Most likely a 3.88:1 ring and pinion, but could be a rare 4.12:1. Would have to see the first two alpha digits on the tranny number to be sure which ratio, but if I was betting, I would pick the former. The number is just below the upside down "VW" emblem in the photo.

That's an AT 3:88 tranny alright. You can see where the pivots have been welded in to convert your car to an IRS. The PO prbably just doesn't even kn ow these things so he avoids you. I have a converted '64. I find the AH 4:12 R/P tranny turns my 31's much better than the AT. I'd like to see the rest of your car. Any pics?

ok then...i just crawled under my bug and took 2 photo's of the tranny numbers.
ive got what looks like 113 301 10 under the upsidedown VW symbol
and on the bottom visible from below the frame horn: DC4775109

does that mean anything to anyone?
i only THINK ive got a 3.88r/p AT gearbox. but dont know for sure and the numbers mean nothing to me. Confused

XLER8=You need to look on the right side next to framehorn in front of CV. Should be stamped in starting with two letters. You do have IRS right?

If it is indeed a "DC" code tranny, it is from a Type three and has a 4.12:1 ring and pinion.

that makes perfect sence since it is single side cover and has been converted to twin IRS spring plates AND type 3 rear brakes.

epic win, i didnt want to have a 3.88 r/p cause i wanted to run larger tires without having to buy a different r/p and all that stuffing about. so now all i gotta do is get some bigger tires then break this tranny and get a 6-rib lol
no wonder the autostick super went faster than this one at 4000 LOL.
had that thing wound up to "oil" (off the clock) on the speedo with a 1600sp engine Laughing

Nice ride. Seen it on here plenty. The AT is actually a little tougher than an AH but the AH is a little lower. If you want to break it do as I did. Dump the clutch in soft sand with a 4 puck clutch. PO put the clutch in . Don't know what he was thinking! Think

I'm wanting to get into a bus box also.

The weekest part of a single side cover, (SSC) tranny is the shift forks. About the time the switch was made to the SSC, they changed to brass shift forks. Hard speed shifting will break them.

The DC tranny, if it has dual side covers should have steel shift forks, and hold up just slightly better for hard shifting.

Both trannies have a week first gear. The SSC tranny that has a offset top rib, (came out in late '74) has a stronger 1st gear set, but will still break under pressure.

If you beat on anything hard enough, it all will break. If you are trying to run it like a race baja, expect a very short life from it.
